Inleiding
De WOONHUIZEN van het type rug-aan-rugwoning zijn gecombineerd met een SMEDERIJ en in 1852-1853 gebouwd in Traditioneel Ambachtelijke stijl. De 18 woningen zijn een jaar na de bouw van de smederij tot stand gekomen, in een periode waarin de behoefte aan arbeiderswoningen erg groot was. Het relatief grote aantal woningen kon op een kleine kavel, goedkoop gebouwd worden.
Nadat de woningwet in 1902 inwerking trad, werd dit type, dat slechte hygiënische omstandigheden in de hand werkte, niet meer gebouwd. De rij woningen met tegen de kopse gevel de smederij, liggen in het centrum van Alblasserdam aan de de Alblas.
Omschrijving
Rij van 14 tussenwoningen en 4 kopwoningen met tegen de kopse zuidgevel een smederij dat middels een lager tussenlid met de woningen verbonden is. Het geheel is over één bouwlaag opgetrokken in gele ijsselsteen (kruisverband) met vlechtingen in de kopse gevels. Het zadeldak van de woningen is gedekt met gesmoorde, geglazuurde Hollandse pannen, het dak van de smederij en het tussenlid heeft rode Hollandse pannen, eenvoudige windveren en een makelaar. Op het dak van de woningen staan 9 bakstenen schoorstenen.
In de kopse gevel aan de straatzijde (noord) zijn op de begane grond twee deuren onder bovenlichten geplaatst die door roeden verdeeld worden en twee schuifvensters onder tweeruits bovenlichten. Ter plaatse van de zolderverdieping bevinden zich twee vierruits schuifvensters. Aan de gevel is een rijk met krullen versierd uithangbord bevestigd met een afbeelding van een smit omgeven door de tekst "smederij" en "1853". De 7 woningen die het oostelijk deel van het complex vormen hebben ieder een voorgevel voorzien van een klein tweeruits venster, een zesruits schuifvenster en een deur onder een bovenlicht, allen onder strekkenbogen. Rechts in deze gevel is een gekoppeld zesruits venster geplaatst. De gevels van de 7 woningen aan de westelijke zijde zijn voorzien van identieke muuropeningen. Rechts in deze gevel is bovendien een inrijdeur onder een bovenlicht geplaatst. De voorgevel van de smederij (noord) bezit een dubbele inrijdeur onder een getoogde strekkenboog, naast de deur een rondboogvormig gietijzeren stalvenster, daarboven een houten luik en een klein zesruits venster. De oostgevel van de smederij heeft een deur, drie zesruits vensters en een kruisvenster. In de achtergevel (zuid) zijn drie zesruits vensters geplaatst met daarboven een vierruits vensters. Tegen de westelijke zijgevel is een deel in hout aangebouwd. In de gevel zijn twee zesruits vensters geplaatst.
INTERIEUR. De indeling van de woningen bevindt zich in de oorspronkelijk staat. Het interieur van de smederij is grotendeels in takt; vermeldenswaardig zijn onder meer de vuurplaats en de wielvloer.
Waardering
Rug-aan-rugwoningen met smederij van cultuurhistorische waarde als zeldzaam voorbeeld van een bijzonder type woningen dat vanaf het begin van deze eeuw niet meer gebouwd werd. Tevens is ook de smederij een zeldzaam voorbeeld van een nog in bedrijf zijnde smederij. Daarnaast van belang vanwege de ensemblewaarde.
De woningen en de smederij zijn gaaf in hoofdvorm, materiaalgebruik en detaillering. Tevens bevindt zich het interieur van de smederij in de oorspronkelijke toestand.
Woningen en smederij liggen in het centrum van Alblasserdam en hebben als zodanig stedenbouwkundige waarde.

The DWELLING HOUSES of the back-to-back type are combined with a BLACKSMITH'S SHOP and were built in 1852-1853 in Traditional Craft style. The 18 dwellings were created one year after the building of the blacksmith's shop, in a period when the demand for workers' housing was very great. The relatively large number of dwellings could be built cheaply on a small plot.

Description
Row of 14 terrace dwellings and 4 corner dwellings with a blacksmith's shop against the gable end south facade connected to the dwellings by means of a lower intermediate section. The whole is constructed over one storey in yellow Ijssel brick (English bond) with brick courses in the gable ends. The gabled roof of the dwellings is covered with smothered, glazed Dutch tiles, the roof of the blacksmith's shop and the intermediate section has red Dutch tiles, simple wind vanes and a makelaar. On the roof of the dwellings stand 9 brick chimneys.
In the gable end on the street side (north) are on the ground floor two doors under fanlights placed which are divided by glazing bars and two sash windows under two-pane fanlights. At the level of the attic storey there are two four-pane sash windows. On the facade a richly decorated signboard with curls is attached with an image of a smith surrounded by the text "blacksmith's shop" and "1853". The 7 dwellings which form the eastern part of the complex each have a front facade provided with a small two-pane window, a six-pane sash window and a door under a fanlight, all under flat arches. On the right in this facade is a coupled six-pane window placed. The facades of the 7 dwellings on the western side are provided with identical wall openings. On the right in this facade an entrance door under a fanlight is also placed. The front facade of the blacksmith's shop (north) has a double entrance door under an arched flat arch, next to the door a round-arched cast-iron stable window, above it a wooden shutter and a small six-pane window. The east facade of the blacksmith's shop has a door, three six-pane windows and a cross window. In the rear facade (south) three six-pane windows are placed with above them a four-pane window. Against the western side facade a wooden section has been added. In the facade two six-pane windows are placed.
INTERIOR. The layout of the dwellings is in the original state. The interior of the blacksmith's shop is largely intact; noteworthy are among other things the hearth and the wheelfloor.
Valuation
Back-to-back dwellings with blacksmith's shop of cultural-historical value as a rare example of a special type of dwelling that was no longer built from the beginning of this century.
