Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Roman Catholic CHURCH dedicated to St. Bartholomaeus, built in Neo-Gothic style in the years 1869-1871 after a design by E.J. Margry. The orientated, three-aisle cross basilica with a virtually completely preserved interior is part of the Roman Catholic complex to which the adjoining parsonage also belongs.
Description
The church is a three-aisle cross basilica, constructed in grey brickwork in flemish bond under a composite roof provided with small roof dormer windows. The front tower extended on the western side has an octagonal spire. All roofs are covered with slates in Dutch bond. The west facade is flanked by two chapel projections. The choir, the transept arms and the chapels are polygonally closed.
In the square substructure of the tower, between the buttresses stepped in three parts, there is a portal, three narrow leaded-glass windows and a rose window set in a pointed arch. The other sides of the tower substructure have round-arch leaded-glass windows. Block and tooth friezes run all around. The portal has hardstone columns carrying natural stone archvolts, double doors with wrought-iron hinges in hardstone door posts under a hardstone lintel, and a fanlight of five natural stone pointed-arch windows. In the gable a trefoil.
The octagonal tower superstructure has four round turrets with conical spires on the corners, decorated with tooth friezes, small light slits and drip mouldings. The superstructure itself has two storeys with below two (on the front one) compressed pointed-arch sparing fields and above two belfry windows and a clock face. Only on the front side a balustrade with quatrefoil motifs. The tower has a spiral staircase on its left side from the ground floor. The octagonal tower spire has small roof dormer windows and is crowned by a weathervane.
On either side of the tower there are three-light windows in the side aisles. The side chapels are provided with leaded-glass windows between the buttresses. In the roofs there are decorative roof dormer windows with lead cross flowers.
The side facades have rose windows with leaded glass between the buttresses, and running mouse-tooth and block-tooth friezes. In the transept arms pointed-arch sparing fields with tall two-lights under round lights. The left side facade has in the corner with the transept a flat block-shaped projection.
The rear facade has pointed-arch leaded-glass windows in the choir and leaded-glass windows in the flanking side chapels between buttresses. Between the choir and the right transept arm there is a projection under a gabled roof with the ridge direction transverse to the choir. Against the projection a conservatory with flat roof, on which again a small projection with two pointed-arch windows under a monopitch roof rests. The front facade of the projection has on either side of a masoned chimney two sash windows under segmental arches. In the ridge a chevron-arch-shaped window with trefoil motifs is divided into two by the chimney. The conservatory has a brick substructure with a wooden and glazed superstructure. The overhanging roof edge rests on corbels.
The interior of the church consists of a church nave of four bays with in the elevation an arcade of natural stone pointed arches on clustered pillars with leaf capitals. Furthermore a tooth band and a clerestory with leaded-glass rose windows under which double blind fields with tooth bands, set in pointed arches. On the clustered pillars rest corbels supporting struts on which the wooden, painted, pointed barrel vault rests. The side aisles have cross-ribbed vaults whose ribs are supported by pilasters. The bays of the side aisles have a three-light window above a segmental sparing field. The choir, the transept arms and the side chapels have pointed-arch windows and pointed sparing fields. Of the church furnishings, of particular importance are the benches in the original arrangement, the high altar and the altars in the side chapels, the baptismal font, the pulpit and the confessional. Between nave and tower portal a double door under a semicircular arch field with a six-foil and an organ gallery. On the organ gallery a two-manual mechanical organ with 12 stops built by L. Ypma in 1885.
