Inleiding

Introduction

Earth-covered, concrete-built ART STORAGE FACILITY, as part of the complex built in 1940-1941 with two such storage facilities. The bunkers were built to the design of J. Emmen, chief engineer at the Rijksgebouwendienst. The commissioning party for the complex was the Contact Committee for the Protection of Cultural Values Against War Dangers.

Description

The entrance to the northeastern ART STORAGE FACILITY consists of an open passage of several metres hollowed out in the sand dune above it with sloping side walls of reinforced concrete to which low diverging side walls of concrete slabs are attached. In the left passage wall is a steel door behind which is the space for the emergency generator which, in case of power failure, was to supply electricity to the air dehumidifying apparatus in both bunkers. To the upper left of the entrance stands the associated concrete chimney (80 x 80 cm, approximately one and a half metres high and covered with a concrete slab of 1.20 by 1.20 m) on the wooded hillside. Before the beginning of the concrete passage floor lies a brick-built circular pit sealed with a round grating into which rainwater can drain. Behind the tall sheet-steel entrance door to the bunker, which is entirely cast in reinforced concrete, the 1.50 metre wide passage, approximately 4.70 metres high, continues for several tens of metres until a heavy 17 cm thick steel vault door. Beyond this door the passage opens after several metres into an approximately fifteen metre long vestibule of the same height and a width of up to approximately 3.30 metres. At right angles to this are two rectangular vaults situated side by side on the left, each seven by nine metres. By the perpendicular arrangement of the passage and the vaults, the blast wave from a possible bomb impact could be better absorbed. The height of the two vaults is likewise approximately 4.70 metres, so that the large historical paintings from the Rijksmuseum could be stored here. To the left of the entrance to each vault (the rear one had an extra wide blast and gas-sealed door) a rectangular concrete space is separated off in the vestibule in which an air dehumidifying installation is positioned. Both engine rooms have a 2 mm thick steel door. The humid air is conducted from the engine room via asbestos cement tubes attached to iron brackets to the ceiling towards ventilation openings above the bunker entrance (the tubes run around the thick vault door). As extra protection for the top pieces in the rear vault, a 9 mm thick sheet-steel door is installed in the vestibule at the level of the rear engine room. The front vault has the same layout as the two vaults in the southwestern bunker: an approximately 2.30 metre-wide central passage and on either side of this four compartments over two metres wide which are separated from each other by three 29.5 cm thick cross walls of 2.35 metres. Along the top of the side walls runs a projecting concrete edge on which the rails for the extendable painting racks rested. The rear vault has a different layout with, approximately two metres from the left wall, a wall running lengthwise (presumably intended for the largest historical paintings) and to the right of the centre four compartments separated by three cross walls of 2 metres. The lengthwise wall ends several metres from the front wall and is provided on the left side with three cross walls one metre long. The vault floor is 50 cm thick, the walls have a thickness of 80 cm, and the thickness of the ceilings is 1.50 metres. On top of this came a sand covering of no less than twelve metres (originally covered with marram grass, now wooded like the surroundings).

Valuation

The art storage facility is of general importance as a historical-functional component of the bunker complex. Of cultural-historical value because of its purpose which is connected with the history of the securing against wartime threat of top pieces from Dutch cultural heritage during the Second World War.
