Inleiding
WEGWIJZER uit 1866. Langs provinciale wegen stonden in die tijd in Noord-Brabant, bij belangrijke wegsplitsingen dergelijke wegwijzers. het gaat om een der laatste overgebleven voorbeelden.
Omschrijving
De wegwijzer, die van gietijzer is, heeft van onder naar boven de volgende opbouw: een rond conisch basement met erop het wapen van Brabant met de gekroonde leeuw; een gecannueleerde schacht met palmetaanzet bij het basement; een cylindrische schacht met de drie richtingborden wijzende naar Geldrop, Nuenen en Helmond. Hier boven op als bekroning een granaatappel.
Op het bord Nuenen staat:"3.2 km 1/2 uur gaans". En op het bord Helmond:"10 km 2 uur gaans".
Waardering
De wegwijzer is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de aanleg en verbetering van een samenhangend net van verbindingswegen op regionaal en provinciaal niveau, het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van de wegwijzers. Het heeft architectuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de eenvoudige maar verfijnde toepassing van min of meer Classicistische motieven aan straatmeubilair. SIGNPOST from 1866. Along provincial roads at that time in North Brabant, at important road junctions such signposts stood. It is one of the last surviving examples.
Description
The signpost, which is of cast iron, has the following structure from bottom to top: a round conical base with the coat of arms of Brabant with the crowned lion; a fluted shaft with palmette base detail at the base; a cylindrical shaft with three direction boards pointing to Geldrop, Nuenen and Helmond. Above this as a crown a pomegranate.
On the Nuenen board stands: "3.2 km 1/2 hour's walk". And on the Helmond board: "10 km 2 hour's walk".
Valuation
The signpost is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of socio-economic development, namely the construction and improvement of a coherent network of connecting roads at regional and provincial level; it is also important for the typological development of signposts.
