Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Church of St. Joseph was executed in 1932 according to a design by B.J. Koldewey and C.M. van Moorsel.
Description:
The church is a three-aisle cruciform church with a large crossing tower, under a gabled roof and hipped roof respectively. The north transept was not built. The church is constructed from hand-formed brickwork laid in Flemish bond. Only natural stone has been used at the entrance porticoes. The lancet windows of the church are coupled three by three. They are fitted with stained glass. The roofs are covered with Roman tiles. The building has a portico facing three directions under a gabled roof. The west portico is flanked on the north side by an octagonal baptistery under a tower roof and on the south side by a square chapel under a flat roof. On the southeast corner a tower base in which a small bell housing with bell. In the design above this chapel a church tower was planned, but this was also not built due to high costs. The side aisles of the church lie under a flat roof. Internally the church has a wide nave and narrow side aisles. Above the nave an open wooden roof truss.
The bas-relief from 1931 of St. Joseph (colloquially "the flat Joseph") is by sculptor Albert Termote. The ceramic Stations of the Cross from 1938 are also from his hand. The concrete calvary group is by sculptor Van de Winkel (The Hague).
Valuation:
The church is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as a distinctive expression of the development of Catholicism in the south and is furthermore of importance as an example of the typological development of the vernacular church in the interwar period, under the influence of the views of A.J. Kropholler. The building has architectural-historical importance through its style and detailing, in particular the wide span of the interior space, and is furthermore of importance as an example of the oeuvre of architects Koldewey and Van Moorsel. It has ensemble values because of its particular location, connected with the expansion of the settlement. It is of importance because of its architectural-historical and building-technical rarity.
