The register's description

Inleiding:

Introduction:

Three LABOURERS' HOUSES from 1880, built in Craft-Traditional style on the orders of the Civil Poor Relief Board. The front or west facade of the houses lies in Heggestraat. The two outer houses, nos. 67 and 71, lie with the east and respectively the north and south facades freestanding on the plot.

The large forecourt is in common use. Now accessible from the southern alley next to the houses. On the north side of the plot, approximately 1.5 metres east of house no. 67, lies the communal barn.

Description:

The three simple houses have one storey with a high front and a low rear facade. They lie under a communal gabled roof, the ridge of which runs parallel to the street, covered with grey old-Dutch tiles and provided with wooden wind bracing.

The front and rear facade of each house is two bays wide, consisting of a door and window. The external walls are constructed of hand-moulded field-kiln bricks, laid in cross-bond. The front facade contains a cement plinth. The applied-clamp external doors are provided with beading. The windows have six-pane sash windows with hard stone sills. House no. 71 has in the back room in the south wall also a six-pane sash window. The fanlight at the front doors has two panes. Each house has two rooms, a front and a back room. In the back room is also the kitchen and the staircase to the open loft.

The stone barn of the houses, which internally is divided in three by a partition wall up to the foot of the roof, likewise has a gabled roof with old-Dutch tiles. The ridge of the barn stands perpendicular to the street. The barn closest to no. 67 belongs to this house, the middle barn is of no. 71 and the furthest barn is of no. 69. Before the houses received their own w.c. built on around 1975, the forecourt was also accessible from the northern alley. Originally the communal privy lay behind, built against the east wall of the barn.

Valuation:

The three labourers' dwelling houses are of general importance. They have cultural-historical significance as a particular expression of concern for labourers' housing and as an example of the typological development of popular housing construction in industrialised settlements. They have architectural-historical significance through their sober formal language and as an early and good example of series housing. It is significant because of the architectural integrity of its exterior and the preserved layout of its interior. Such properties have gradually become extremely rare.
