Inleiding
Vanaf 1809 werd onder leiding van Baron van Dedem begonnen met het graven van de Dedemsvaart. Dit kanaal liep vanuit Hasselt oostwaarts en was bedoeld om het veengebied, dat langs de noordgrens van Overijssel lag, te ontsluiten. Aan dit kanaal ontstonden diverse dorpen. Het grootste werd Dedemsvaart-dorp.
In 1859 werd ter nagedachtenis aan W.J.B. Baron van Dedem een in Neo-Classicistische trant vormgegeven GEDENKTEKEN opgericht. Het object is vervaardigd door L.J. Enthoven & Co.(Den Haag) en staat in het centrum van Dedemsvaart. Het is in 1984 gerestaureerd.
Omschrijving
IJzeren gedenkteken bestaande uit een taps toelopende schacht op een vierkant basement. Op de schacht is een engel geplaatst in korte tuniek met lauwerkrans en een vergulde bazuin.
Op het basement zijn haut-reliefs aangebracht en de tekst "9 July 1809-1859", gevat in een krans.
Op de schacht staat de tekst "ter dankbare nagedachtenis aan W.J.B. Baron van Dedem den stichter der Dedemsvaart", en het familiewapen.

Introduction
From 1809 onwards, under the leadership of Baron van Dedem, work began on the excavation of the Dedemsvaart. This canal ran eastwards from Hasselt and was intended to open up the peat area that lay along the northern border of Overijssel. Various villages developed along this canal. The largest became Dedemsvaart-dorp.
In 1859, a MEMORIAL was erected in Neo-Classical style to commemorate W.J.B. Baron van Dedem. The object was created by L.J. Enthoven & Co. (Den Haag) and stands in the centre of Dedemsvaart. It was restored in 1984.
Description
Iron memorial consisting of a tapered shaft on a square base. On the shaft is placed an angel in a short tunic with a laurel wreath and a gilded trumpet.
On the base are high reliefs and the text "9 July 1809-1859", set within a wreath.
On the shaft stands the text "ter dankbare nagedachtenis aan W.J.B. Baron van Dedem den stichter der Dedemsvaart", and the family coat of arms.
