De OUDE PROEFTUIN werd in 1927 aangelegd in de moestuin. Aan de noordzijde van de rechthoekige, zonnige tuin een lange houten schutting van verticale delen en een vaste plantenborder van 30 meter lang en 4 meter breed in gemengde kleuren. In de visie van Mien Ruys is de beplanting die in één keer is te overzien, in één kleurschema gehouden en hierbij is gekozen voor de kleuren geel, oranje en rood, afgewisseld door blauw en paars. Ook met de vorm van de planten is rekening gehouden. Langs de border ligt een breed grasveld met in het gras, langs het rechte pad van griontegels (dubbele rij), staan enkele losse groepen van ondermeer Bergenia en Iris germanica en siergrassen. Aan de zuidzijde en de smalle oost- en westzijde heesterbeplanting. Aan de zuidzijde een grote taxusbol en op de overgang naar de Watertuin een prieelberk. In de tuin een betonnen vogeldrinkbak.
Waardering
De OUDE PROEFTUIN is als onderdeel van het complex 'Tuinen van Mien Ruys' van algemeen belang:
- als onderdeel van de proeftuinen die een representatief voorbeeld zijn van modernistische tuinarchitectuur, ontworpen en aangelegd door tuinarchitect Mien Ruys in de periode 1924-1999;
- vanwege de, ook in detail, gaaf bewaarde hoofdstructuur van de tuin bestaande uit een verhard pad, border en schutting, waarbinnen een gaaf bewaard beplantingschema;

The OLD TEST GARDEN was established in 1927 in the vegetable garden. On the north side of the rectangular, sunny garden a long wooden fence of vertical sections and a fixed planting border 30 metres long and 4 metres wide in mixed colours. In Mien Ruys' vision, the planting which can be taken in at a glance is kept in a single colour scheme and here the colours yellow, orange and red were chosen, alternated by blue and purple. The form of the plants was also taken into account. Along the border lies a broad grass field with, in the grass, along the straight path of grit tiles (double row), some loose groups of among others Bergenia and Iris germanica and ornamental grasses. On the south side and the narrow east and west sides shrub planting. On the south side a large yew ball and on the transition to the Water Garden a pergola birch. In the garden a concrete bird bath.
