Omschrijving
Waardering
HOOFDGEBOUW (Klein Drakenstein) is van algemeen belang:
- vanwege de ouderdom;
- vanwege de architectonische vormgeving;
- vanwege de deels gaaf bewaard gebleven achttiende-eeuwse interieurafwerking;
- vanwege de functioneel-ruimtelijke relatie met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats;
- vanwege de kenmerkende ligging binnen de tuin- en parkaanleg;

Description
Description
MAIN BUILDING Klein Drakenstein was built in 1780 according to sources not further defined, in the woodland and heathland area around the Lage Vuursche. The main building is a block-shaped, entirely cellar-ed house of red brick, with two storeys and an attic under a hipped roof covered with blue tiles. The roof is provided with four chimneys at the ridge ends. The façades are finished with a simple cornice. The front and rear façades are five bays wide and provided with multi-pane sash windows with small panes, which were installed after 1963 (RDMZ photograph) to replace multi-pane sash windows in Empire style. The entrance section is located in the middle bay of the symmetrical front façade. A low sandstone step leads to a single entrance door with ornamental fanlight, set in a simple sandstone pilaster arrangement with entablature. Door and fanlight are, like the lanterns on either side, of post-1963 date. On either side of the door section two windows on the first floor, five multi-pane sash windows. Originally all windows were provided with external shutters, but these were largely removed after 1963. The shape of the windows, their number and position in the side and rear façades have been substantially altered over time, although mostly in keeping with the style of the house (see old RDMZ photographs). Against the right side façade there are two external chimneys. Against the left side façade at the rear a wooden scullery with pantiled roof has been built, which also serves as a rear entrance; this addition dates from the second half of the twentieth century and is of minor importance for protection. In the rear façade various types of windows: in the two left bays at basement level two double multi-pane casement windows with shutters, at ground floor level two multi-pane sash windows with shutters, on the first floor two multi-pane sash windows. In the middle bay at the level of the piano nobile and first floor in a large spandrel a small window, at basement level a sloping glazed extension (installed in the 20th century and of minor importance for protection), which serves as a light-permeable covering of the stairs to the basement room beneath the upper room. In the right two bays on the ground floor two tall multi-pane sash windows and above them multi-pane sash windows as in the two left bays. On the roof on all sides a dormer with multi-pane windows. The dormer on the front façade has a simple decorative frame of cheeks and a curved tympanum to which a hoisting beam is attached.
The layout of a central corridor onto which the various rooms open is intact both on the ground floor and on the first floor. The staircase which was originally presumably situated at the end of this central axis has, however, been moved and is now situated transversely across the corridor between the front and rear rooms on the left side of the house. In the corridor a white marble floor from the period of construction, the tiles measuring approximately 50 by 50 centimetres. In the right front room a wooden fireplace mantel in Louis XIV style. The right rear room has been raised on behalf of a room at basement level, in this room a slanted wooden fireplace, also in Louis XIV style. On the first floor and attic storey bedrooms with bathrooms. Both on the ground floor and on the first floor eighteenth-century, simple, cased timber beam ceilings.
Valuation
MAIN BUILDING (Klein Drakenstein) is of general interest:
- by reason of its age;
- by reason of its architectural design;
- by reason of the partly well-preserved eighteenth-century interior finish;
- by reason of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate;
- by reason of the characteristic location within the garden and park layout;
- as part of the series of historic country estates on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.
