The register's description

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de vroeg-19de-eeuwse aanleg in landschapsstijl waarbij gebruik is gemaakt van het oude duinlandschap en waarbij de serpentinevormige waterloop en de vijverpartij karakteristiek elementen vormen;

- vanwege de visuele samenhang met de overige onderdelen van de buitenplaats;

Description component 2: HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the recreation park and former country estate Te Werve.

The originally rectangular parcel, surrounded by ditches, lies parallel to the east-west oriented Van Vredenburchweg and the sand canal from circa 1726. The house is accessible via an eighteenth-century driveway in layout with a ditch on the east side, which stands at right angles to the house and in the landscape period acquired an oblique branch towards the house. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the orientation was rotated halfway by relocating the access part of the main building from the east to the north facade. The landscape-style arrangement of the same period connected to this by the creation of a broad sight axis in a southerly direction across the lawn and meadows, now a water feature 'de put'. In a northerly direction a broad sight avenue was preserved.

To the west of the driveway is situated the landscape park; to the east of the driveway lies an open field which in the nineteenth century as ornamental meadow formed part of the arrangement and now with the functional shift to recreation park at the beginning of the twentieth century has been laid out as sports grounds.

In the early nineteenth-century landscape park use was made of the relief of the old dune landscape. The structure-determining elements are formed by the serpentine-shaped stream and the moat enlarged into a pond feature (see Cadastral Map 1812). Along the stream and pond stand monumental solitary trees including a Weeping Beech and a Common Horse Chestnut. From the pond feature runs a loop-shaped water course around a small island; this course is indicated for the first time on a plan of the arrangement from 1848 by S.W. van Noordaa. On this map is also drawn a fine-meshed lobe-shaped path system, much of which has now disappeared. The curved avenue planted with beeches along the north edge of the park is still intact. The park wood has a large number of old trees. To the south of the house the arrangement has determined an open character by the lobe-shaped lawn before the house with some solitary trees, the dovecote and a clear view over the water feature. 'De put' which was dug between 1908 and 1910 for sand extraction has replaced the meadow landscape, but the open character has been preserved. During the sand excavation, a ditch on the side of the country estate was followed, which runs with a bend around an artificial elevation in the landscape (this 'kaagberg' is mentioned in 1800). On the west side of the arrangement along 'De put' runs an old road, called the Laan van Bode, which farmers used to reach the meadows.

When the country estate was acquired in 1920 as a clubhouse and recreation grounds, the country property was put into use as a recreational destination and recreation park. For this purpose Te Werve was furnished with a boathouse, tennis courts and the like for this new use.

The rectangular area to the east of the dovecote was laid out as a utility and ornamental garden with greenhouses, stone flower beds, an orangery and a garden wall. Now only the orangery and garden wall remind of this function.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Te Werve is of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of the early nineteenth-century landscape-style arrangement in which use was made of the old dune landscape and in which the serpentine-shaped water course and pond feature form characteristic elements;

- because of the visual coherence with the other components of the country estate;

- as an example of a recreational destination and recreation park of a major Dutch enterprise.
