Inleiding
Voor de in 1831 overleden geleerde Mr. C.J.W. Nahuys van Burgst in 1832 ontworpen gietijzeren grafmonument. Het ontwerp is van de hand van de Bredase architect P. Huysers Az. Uitvoering geschiedde door de firma Nederburg, Nering Bögel en Comp. IJzergieters te Deventer.
Omschrijving
GRAFMONUMENT op vierkante grondslag bestaande uit een taps toelopende schacht voorzien van afdekplaat met frontons in alle windrichtingen, bekroond door een vaas met draperie. Het monument heeft een hardstenen basement.
De schacht van het monument bestaat uit vier platen, voorzien van teksten en aan de onderzijde versierd met een eierlijst. Op de hoeken zijn naar beneden gerichte fakkels aangebracht. Verder zijn kleinere, sobere ornamenten toegepast. De ornamenten zijn afzonderlijk gegoten en later toegevoegd. Oorspronkelijk was het monument geschilderd.
Nb. Basement en urn zijn na een ongelukje met een grasmaaimachine tijdelijk opgeslagen om verder verval te voorkomen (2001).
Waardering
Het in 1832 opgerichte GRAFMONUMENT voor Nahuys van Burgst is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als getuigenis van de funeraire symboliek voor de welgestelden. Het heeft kunsthistorische waarde vanwege de classicistische vormentaal, de vroege toepassing van gietijzer voor grafmonumenten en de plaats in het oeuvre van architect Huysers en het uitgevoerde werk van de firma Nederburg, Nering Bögel en Comp. te Deventer. Description
FUNERARY MONUMENT on a square base consisting of a tapering shaft provided with a cover plate with pediments in all directions, crowned by an urn with drapery. The monument has a hardstone base.
The shaft of the monument consists of four plates, provided with texts and decorated at the bottom with an egg moulding. On the corners downward-pointing torches have been placed. Furthermore, smaller, sober ornaments are applied. The ornaments are cast individually and added later. Originally the monument was painted.
Note: Base and urn were temporarily stored after an accident with a lawnmower to prevent further deterioration (2001).
Valuation
The FUNERARY MONUMENT erected in 1832 for Nahuys van Burgst is of general interest. It has cultural-historical value as a testimony to funerary symbolism for the wealthy. It has art-historical value because of the classical formal language, the early application of cast iron for funerary monuments and the place in the oeuvre of architect Huysers and the executed work of the firm Nederburg, Nering Bögel and Comp. in Deventer.
