The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

A detached mansion-type RESIDENCE built around 1850, with an older core. By the middle of the eighteenth century, a building already stood on this location, which served as the official residence of the bailiff of Meerkerk.

The construction year, patron and architect of the present building are unknown. It is possible that it originally had a different function (school with teacher's residence?), but no information is available on this either. The building has a rather austere appearance, which is characteristic of much architecture with the stylistic features of Neoclassicism.

The house - which for a long time served as a notary's residence and office - forms the northwestern closure of a small square, whereby it has an important town-planning and image-defining function in the heart of Meerkerk.

Description

From a rectangular floor plan, a building constructed in fine brickwork with an upper storey, beneath a mansard roof covered with glazed Dutch tiles and with a built-up chimney on the left ridge end. Five-bay, symmetrical front facade of the cornice-topped facade type with plastered plinth and slightly projecting middle bay. Standing behind a sandstone step plate is the entrance with a double door with cast-iron window grilles beneath a moulded lintel and a round-arch fanlight with curved tracery. Decorative reliefs in the spandrels between fanlight and cornice of the entrance frame. On either side of the middle risalite are two windows set beneath lintels with the original six-pane windows behind external window frames. The leaded glass in the upper panes dates probably from around 1925. The five storeys of windows likewise stand beneath lintels and contain casement T-windows. Facade termination in the form of an entablature with moulded edge and a dentil moulding at the projecting gutter. The middle risalite is crowned by a pediment with a flat tympanum.

Plastered left side facade with false joints and two closed windows per storey. The six-pane sash windows on the ground floor likewise stand behind external window frames. The lower-rising rear part of the house is terminated by a flat roof. From the lower roof slope on this side projects a non-original roof dormer. The section behind the main volume that is joined to the house contains, among other things, a former coach house. The facade of this, oriented towards Kerkstraat, is plastered and provided with false joints and closed openings. Right side facade with on the ground floor to the left a window set beneath a lintel with frame behind an external window frame and to the right of this likewise a window set beneath a lintel with a six-pane window. The right (rear) part of the house stands under a continuous roof slope and contains a small arched window.

In front of the front door stand two sandstone bollards, which are connected to the house by means of iron railings. The interior of the house has a rather hybrid character. Various alterations - including in 1930 and 1965 - are partly responsible for this. The interior still contains some nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century components.
