Introduction

Former ISRAELITE BURIAL GROUND, located in the garden - within the enclosure - of the property Silvoldseweg 17 in Terborg.

Although it cannot be established with certainty, the history of this burial ground may go back to at least 1723. When the surveyor Johann Ludwig Eck makes a survey in 1723 of the Wisch possessions and names the plots, the plot on which the burial ground now stands is called 'Judenberg'. The name 'berg' indicates the location of the burial ground on a drift dune. Remarkable is that the burial ground is located on territory that was never owned by the Jewish community. Unfortunately, nothing is known about the relationship between the burial ground and the construction of the villa in the immediate vicinity of the burial ground.

The gravestones date mostly from the nineteenth century.

Description

The burial ground is located on a higher plateau to the northwest of the villa. The plateau is separated from the garden by an embankment. The exact boundaries of the burial ground cannot be determined due to the absence of an original enclosure.

The gravestones are oriented towards the south, with the exception of four, which are oriented towards the east. The stones are partly made of hardstone, partly of cemented brick (16, 19 and 28), one of sandstone (15) and there is one grave memorial made of cast iron (11). The hardstone gravestones are in reasonable to good condition, the brick gravestones are broken and the broken section is missing. The cast iron grave memorial is in moderate condition. From the sandstone gravestone the 'skin' is largely flaked off, whereby the inscription has also largely disappeared. Grave no. 6 was provided with an enclosure by means of two small posts directly opposite the stone and chains between the posts themselves and between the stone and the posts. The same applies to the five graves of the Straus family (21 to 25) which were jointly provided with one enclosure with five posts opposite the stones. On the basis of the legible Dutch inscriptions, the oldest grave currently dates from 1864 (14), the youngest from 1932 (21).

Valuation

Former Israelite burial ground from at least the first quarter of the 18th century with graves now mainly from the 19th century. Boundaries cannot be determined due to the absence of an enclosure.
