Omschrijving onderdeel 2:

Description of component 2:

PARK LAYOUT, consisting of a. transverse avenue b. vista avenue and meadows c. forecourt d. courtyard e. park f. vegetable garden g. agricultural land

ad a.: the straight transverse avenue perpendicular to the Kasteellaan (as a route from early 19th century or older) serves as a driveway to the forecourt, which is reached at a sharp angle over the earthen dam in the northern arm of the outer moat; the avenue has a gravel surface and on both sides a planting of a single row of trees, irregularly mixed beeches and lindens and some oaks. ad b.: the vista avenue, 19th century or older, running at a 60-degree angle to the transverse avenue, continues as an extension and component of the central axis of the castle, the courtyard and the forecourt from the said dam towards the village; the planting is formed by a few rows of lindens; the avenue has a grass surface and is not used for traffic; beside the avenue on both sides a meadow; these are very important from a visual, landscape and (cultural) historical perspective as a transition between the village and the historic country estate. ad c.: the forecourt, 18th century or older, is actually a short broad avenue, which is surfaced with rubble of grey stone chips; symmetrically on both sides in the extension of the residential buildings planted with partly very old (18th century) lindens; on the north side the forecourt is bounded by the outer moat. ad d.: the courtyard, 18th century or older, lies between the two residential buildings and is separated from the forecourt by a wall in which in the middle the access gate (see under 5). On the south side (= castle side) the courtyard is bounded by the moat wall (see under 3) of the inner moat, in which the castle lies; the newly laid brick paving falls outside the protection. ad e.: the actual park section, 18th century, is small and lies together with the vegetable garden within the outer moat; part of the western boundary is formed by the Kasteellaan, namely where the moat is absent. The park sections beside the residential buildings are characterised by unevenness in the form of small embankments on which quite a few old lindens (18th century) still stand; undergrowth of shrubs and grass; remains of a simple path pattern, in particular on the small embankments. South of the castle a small park triangle, consisting of a grass field with a single solitary tree; this triangle is bounded by the Kasteellaan, the inner moat and the moat section that connects the outer moat with the inner moat. Striking is the great enclosure of the park in relation to the surrounding land. On the far side of the Kasteellaan there are (protected) remains of the park layout that lies somewhat further from the castle. ad f.: the vegetable garden, 18th century, lies to the southeast of the castle and is surrounded by the outer moat on three sides; between the vegetable garden and the northeastern park section lies a hook-shaped section of moat, which opens into the eastern arm of the outer moat; the vegetable garden currently consists of a number of compartments, in which small gardens have been recently laid out. ad g.: a part of the open fields and park remains with watercourses to the north and south of the park section of the country estate, important as a complementary economic component in relation to the park section more focused on 'ornament' (recreation).

Valuation

PARK LAYOUT of general importance

- because of its age

- because of its cultural-historical and landscape-visual values

- because of the coherence between the enclosure of the primarily recreational park and the openness of a part of the surrounding landscape; furthermore there are strong relationships between these two aspects and the relationship with the reclamation and water management history which here (as on many other Brabant country estates) plays such a great role.
