Inleiding
Zandstenen deksteen in vallende tand.

Description
Introduction
A semi-detached gentleman's house with an associated entrance gate, named Kroonvilla after the client Arnold Kroon, designed in 1895 by Christiaan Bernhard Posthumus Meyjes (1858-1922) in the style of Neo-French Renaissance and completed in 1897-98. Posthumus Meyjes made frequent use of Neo-Renaissance styles. His designs are generally monumental in proportion and richly decorated. The gentleman's house was built in the period 1897-1898 on commission from Arnold Kroon; teacher, doctor of philosophy and from 1897 to 1902 alderman for Educational Affairs in Leiden. Posthumus Meyjes created one design for Stationsstraat 23 to 27. The centrally located gentleman's house adjoins directly at number 23, between numbers 25 and 27 there is a small gate. Through this the left side facade (north) is exposed. The small gate originally led to the large garden behind the house; after the war a courtyard was built in it. In front of the house on the street there still stands a wrought-iron fence. The Kroonvilla forms the focal point in the row of three, thanks to the richer detailing of the exterior and the much richer decoration of the interior. The interior, with a single Art Nouveau element, has been preserved in particularly good condition.
Description
The Kroonvilla is built over two storeys on a rectangular ground plan under a truncated composite hipped roof with slates in Maas bond. The front facade and a small part of the left side facade are built in red facing brick, the remaining facades in red brick. The ground floor of the front facade is provided with ashlar rustication of hard stone.
Above this, rustication in upright dentils at the corners. In the front facade all ornaments, reliefs and mouldings above the ground floor are executed in sandstone, in the rear facade and side facade in plasterwork.
The front facade (west) has four window bays. The entrance portal is located in the second bay from the right. In the portal a double wooden panel door with wooden carving, four small round windows and ornamental ironwork. The right window bay projects and has on the ground floor a three-sided oriel, above it a balcony with a balustrade. The first floor of the leftmost window bay recedes sharply. In this corner a balcony with a large wooden pergola on square sandstone columns with abstracted capitals. To the left of the facade adjoining a small gate of hard stone. In the small gate a double wooden door with ornamental ironwork. On the small gate two pylons with ornamental metalwork between them. The flush T-windows and composite windows on the first floor in mouldings with reliefs.
Above the windows garlands, consoles, portraits and cornice mouldings. Below the windows among other things medallions with emperor portraits. The facade is closed by an overhanging sandstone drip moulding on consoles. In the cornice above the windows plaques between volutes. Above the projecting section reliefs with horns of plenty and skulls of horses. Above this again an attic with urns. In the roof three large dormer windows between volutes under gabled roofs with pediments, crowned by finials.
In the side facade and rear facade (east) flush cross windows under segmental arches. Interlacing in the arch drums, plastered springer and keystone stones. Behind the balcony the drip moulding is executed in wood. Water and cornice mouldings in side and rear facades plastered.
In the left side facade (north) to the left of the balcony a stair light with leaded glass.
To the left of this a projecting section that is built higher under a stay roof with spout gable. In the gable top a double wooden door with small panes behind a French balcony under part of a trefoil. Sandstone coping stone in falling dentils.
The right part of the rear facade projects. Right in the projecting section a segmental arch door. Left in front of the projecting section a rectangular oriel, far left an orangery on an oval ground plan. The double external wall of the orangery consists of an iron framework with glass on a plastered plinth. Clamps and volutes in the roof of the wrought-iron structure. The plinth with segmentally closed niches projects and forms a kind of bench. In the roof above the rear facade four dormer windows with pediments. Two large masonry chimneys, one of which is incorporated in the spout gable at the side.
Interior
In the interior have been preserved among other things: panel wainscots; panel doors; door posts with fluted pilasters, cornices, black knobs and lion and human heads on consoles; stucco ceilings with large cassettes, knobs and palmettes; wall coverings; parquet floors.
In the hall on the ground floor among other things: white and red marble floor; draught door with stained leaded glass in a moulding with Louis XVI woodcarving. In the rooms on the ground floor among other things: black marble fireplaces, above these the mouldings in which the mirrors originally were; a wooden fireplace with carved heads and a tile tableau by J.L. Schouten of the Prinsenhof in Delft between sandstone columns with dragons on the consoles; plastered medallions with laurel leaves, scrollwork and cresting above the doors.
The kitchen is still almost complete with among other things: tiles in chessboard pattern on the floor; a tile wainscot under a decorative border with relief tiles; above it white tiles and a decorative border just below the ceiling; a fireplace with fluted pilasters; a marble worktop on a hard stone base with wooden cabinet doors and a pump; built-in wooden cupboards.
The wooden imperial staircase in the hall is provided with volutes and cassettes on the underside of the steps. A balustrade with carved balusters forms the stair rail. The newel posts are decorated with busts, consoles, lion heads, black knobs and a pineapple. The stained leaded glass stair light with the inscription 'Sapienta' was designed by A. le Comte. Above the stairs a roof light with leaded glass.
On the first floor among other things: a wooden wall panel with clock and garlands, cherub, egg-and-dart and scrollwork in the hall; keystones with lion heads; a wooden fireplace with carved heads and an Art Nouveau tile tableau from around 1897 by the pottery factory Rozenburg from The Hague between sandstone columns and consoles; leaded glass fanlights by J.L. Schouten of the Prinsenhof in Delft.
Valuation
The gentleman's house with associated gate is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value due to the style of Neo-French Renaissance in the exterior and interior and a single Art Nouveau interior component. Moreover the design is characteristic of the oeuvre of C.B. Posthumus Meyjes. Thanks to the visually determining location on Stationsweg, the gentleman's house is also of great value in urban design terms. The ensemble value of the house in combination with Stationsweg 23 and 27 is moreover particularly high. Both the exterior and the interior of the gentleman's house are in particularly good condition.
