Inleiding

Introduction

Two semi-detached DWELLINGS on the Roomburgerweg from 1927, designed by Job G. Hansen (1899-1960) in 1927 on behalf of J.C. de Graaf and H. Altink in the manner of the Nieuwe Bouwen. The latter was a brother of Jan Altink, who was a member of the Groningen art circle De Ploeg, where Hansen had been part as an architect since 1923. De Stijl was a major source of inspiration for Hansen. On the Roomburgerweg he wanted to build houses that would not impose themselves on the inhabitants, but which the inhabitants could share in according to their own discretion. The semi-detached dwellings in Leiden were Hansen's first designs as an independent architect. From the houses one looks out from the front over the Rijn-Schiekanaal, along which the Roomburgerweg runs. The layout of the semi-detached houses has since changed from two semi-detached dwellings to two detached dwellings. The internal balcony of the right block has been drawn into the interior.

Description

The semi-detached dwellings are constructed over two storeys in red Groningen brick, under a flat roof that overhangs above the side facades. The houses have a concrete structure with floor slabs, which are made visible in the facade. Furthermore, the unjointed walls of smooth red brick are interrupted by large windows in steel frames, above drip mouldings of black glazed ceramic. At a number of corners windows turn the corner.

The layout of the facades is strongly asymmetrical. In broad terms the two buildings are equal to each other. In the design of the front facade small differences have been made in the form and placement of the windows and a balcony. The entrances to the dwellings are located in the side facades, whereby the entrance is situated centrally in the houses. The living rooms are at the front.

Behind the hall the dining room and kitchen are situated next to each other. A large extension at the back was intended as a scullery. The dining rooms project in the side facades. At the two left houses (north) the first storey projects and forms a canopy above the entrances. In the left corner of the front and side facade an internal balcony. The floor slab is drawn through at the right house of the right block (south) and forms a balcony there above the entrance with steel pipes as a railing.

In the front facades (west) on the ground floor two large windows. Above the two windows on the ground floor a wide whitewashed concrete beam. On the first storey on the left the internal balcony. On the right a large window that turns the corner (in the left building) and a double window (in the right building). In the sculleries at the back the concrete lintels above the glass doors have been preserved. Originally in the place of the glass doors there were two narrow window openings. On either side of the extended sculleries narrow windows. On the first storey per dwelling two tripartite windows and a wooden balcony door with fanlight providing access to the flat roof of the scullery.

Both buildings have in the middle of the roof a skylight, beneath which are the fanlights of the staircases. On the left building stands the original tall chimney.

Interior

In the dwellings among others still preserved: Sills and windowsills on the front of petit granite, on the back consisting of black tiles. Skirting boards of black tiles, wooden floors, glazed doors with lines in the glass, black marble chimney breasts.

Hardstone thresholds with plinths below the external doors. Fanlight with leaded glass above entrance.

In the stairwell the doorpost of the toilet door projects slightly. The wooden stair railing consists of a round beam on thin iron supports, the rising wainscoting of tiles. A robust stair gate with flat balusters and a flat fanlight above the stair.

Valuation

The semi-detached dwellings on the Roomburgerweg are of general interest on account of their culture and architectural-historical value due to the building style related to the Nieuwe Bouwen.

Moreover, the dwellings are good examples of the most progressive architectural development within the artists' association De Ploeg.

Finally, the designs are the first products of Hansen as an independent architect and therefore of great importance in his oeuvre.

From an urban planning perspective the two semi-detached dwellings are of general interest on account of their prominent location on the Rijn-Schiekanaal.

Despite the coupling of the dwellings and some alterations both the exterior and interior of both blocks are relatively intact, both in the conception and in a number of components.
