Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

The VILLA for the manufacturer D. van Oordt was completed in the period from 1896 to 1897 in an Eclectic architectural style with elements from the Neo-Dutch Renaissance and Chalet style. The villa stands with its front facade (south) on the Haagweg, with the rear situated in a garden on the river Rhine. In the garden stands a solitary beech, along the Haagweg a wrought-iron fence.

When a church was built next to the villa in the nineteen-thirties of the twentieth century, it acquired the function of a rectory for the Franciscans. The layout of the house was largely preserved with the change of function. The conservatory on the rear (north) was replaced in the nineteen-eighties of the twentieth century. The large window in the originally blind western side facade dates from the nineteen-fifties. The slates that originally lay on the roof have been replaced by a bituminous roof covering.

The interior has been largely well preserved.

Description

The villa is constructed over two storeys on a roughly rectangular floor plan with annexes and projecting sections under a composite truncated hipped roof with a far overhanging wooden gutter on carved wooden consoles.

Cassettes at the underside of the gutter. In the roof three mortared chimneys, two small roof dormers under hipped rooflets and one large roof dormer. Gable ends with wooden ornamental roof trusses under coping caps conclude the projecting sections. Above the projecting stairwell a steeply overhanging hipped roof.

The facades are constructed in red brick above a rusticated hardstone plinth and fitted with sandstone setting and closing stones and banding courses at the height of the fanlights. At ground floor level a continuous hardstone drip moulding under the windows, a sandstone drip moulding between the storeys and on the first floor hardstone drip mouldings. Flush-faced windows with single, two-, three- and four-part fanlights under segmental arches articulate the facades. The number of segmental arches corresponds with the arrangement of the windows (single or tripartite) under the fanlights. Basketwork in the arch voussoirs, ornamental brickwork under the windows.

In the front facade (south) the left portion of the facade projects under a coping cap with a wooden ornamental roof truss. In front of the projecting section a three-sided oriel on the ground floor, which transitions into a rectangular oriel on the first floor. Above it a balcony with a wooden balustrade and two wooden small columns which are connected to the ornamental roof truss.

The entrance is located in the right side facade (east), of which the right portion projects under a coping cap with ornamental roof truss and overhanging half-hipped end. Against the projecting section a flat annexe of one storey. The angle between this side facade and the front facade is chamfered and contains on both floors a narrow window, under a coping cap with ornamental roof truss. The entrance is located in the corner pocket between the facade and the projecting section. It is a panelled door with glass, ornamental ironwork and a lamp under a quarter-round glazed canopy on iron consoles. In front of the entrance a hardstone step.

In the middle of the rear facade (north) is a double glazed door above a hardstone staircase with terrace. To the right of it the conservatory with above it a set-back facade section behind a balcony. On the balcony a wooden carved balcony fence. In the roof above this section a broad roof dormer under a pediment.

The left side facade (west) was originally blind, with the exception of the projecting stairwell, which is built higher. Because it breaks through the gutter and is covered with a steep hipped roof, it functions as a tower. Above the two narrow leaded glass windows on the ground floor, two large six-part stair lights with leaded glass. On both storeys of the blind facade sections a banding course.

Interior

From the interior the following elements in particular have been preserved: The hall with an inlaid terrazzo floor, a porcelain wash basin with polychromatic back panel, a wooden wall lining with timbering, door posts and panelled doors and a timbered wooden ceiling. A draught vestibule with a marble floor and wainscoting, draught doors with etched glass, depicting tropical scenes. A lavatory with terrazzo floor and leaded glass windows.

A stairwell with a wooden staircase, a wooden newel post, a wooden stair rail with crossing stiles with knobs and diamond heads, plastered walls with false joints and wooden wainscoting, abstract leaded glass stair lights and stuccoed/wooden keystones.

Stuccoed ceilings in the hall on the first floor and in four rooms.

In the cellar: barrel vaults and segmental arches.

Valuation

The villa Van Oordt from 1896-97 on the Haagweg is of general importance due to its cultural-historical value as a representative example of a late nineteenth-century manufacturer's villa.

Moreover, the villa is of general importance due to the Eclectic architectural style characteristic of the construction period with elements from the Neo-Dutch Renaissance and Chalet style and the associated use of materials. The property is visually distinctive situated along one of the important access roads to Leiden and the Galgewater.

Both the exterior and interior have been largely well preserved in their principal form and detailing.
