Inleiding

Introduction

In 1881 commissioned by property developers C. Goedkoop and A. and F. Stokhuijzen, a MANSION was built. The house is situated on the terrain (Plantsoen) which in 1842 was transformed into a "municipal park" according to designs by city architect Salomon van der Paauw and landscape and garden architect J.D. Zocher, where until 1830 the defensive wall from Hogewoerdspoort to Koepoort that had enclosed the city was demolished that year. Leiden architect W.C. Mulder was the designer of this stately corner house in an eclectic style. The building, with its front facade facing the Plantsoen, is part of a closed facade wall and is also part of the protected townscape.

Description

Built on an L-shaped plan, an underpinned corner building with one storey under a hipped roof covered with zinc slates (front side) and mastic, composite, truncated. Asymmetrical cornice-topped facade extending across four window bays and featuring accents and bands of white painted plasterwork. Symmetrical, two-bay right facade section with ashlar plinth. Ground floor with sash windows in the two arched windows with closing and setting stones in the segmental arches of the profile mouldings. Above this a profiled band moulding. On the storey above likewise two arched windows with sash windows. Recessed parapets below these windows decorated with multicoloured tiles with a lozenge motif. Cornice with cyma moulding, guttae and fluting on the double corner consoles. Above this a broken pediment with profiled moulding. In the tympanum a wooden dormer with a straight-sided window between fluted pilasters, narrow wing sections and a curved pediment. Recessed left facade section with on the ground floor a window as in the right facade section and an entrance with the original door under an arched fanlight. Before the door a staircase with steps of grey ashlar. This facade section is roofed by the two-bay wide wooden first-floor oriel window, which rests on four iron columns with capitals and architraves with arched underside of plastered brick, and which contains a profile moulding on flat roof. In the place of the oriel there was formerly a wide arched window and a balcony. Facade termination in the form of a cornice as that of the right facade section. In the roof slope above a straight-sided roof window. Left side facade with two arched basement windows in ashlar plinth, bands, on the right on the ground floor in the centre a low arched window with profiled segmental arch under a lintel with keystone, intermediate and setting blocks. On the storey above a higher window with identical moulding. The cornice with three double consoles below the profiled gutter moulding is as that on the front facade. Protruding from the roof slope covered with mastic on the left a chimney of fair-face brick. The wrought-iron railings of the front garden are attached to cast-iron fence posts. The rear facade facing the 4de Binnenvestgracht, likewise with four window bays and featuring all around at the basement level a wall with door. On the principal floor four straight-sided windows under a lintel, on the storey above three, likewise straight-sided windows of comparable size and a small lavatory window.

The interior still contains various original components. On the principal floor a (draught) vestibule with and a floor covered with marble, likewise with marble-clad walls, a ceiling decorated with stucco and opening draught doors under a divided fanlight. In the front room a neo-baroque stucco ceiling and in the rear room a marble fireplace. On the storey above a comparable stucco ceiling and marble fireplace. Basement with kitchen, in which fireplace with wooden casing and white tiles with characteristic "turn-of-the-century decoration".

Valuation

The eclectic-Renaissance mansion from 1881 is of general importance due to its cultural and architectural-historical value as an internally and externally largely well-preserved representative example of residential construction for the affluent from the relevant building period; also of importance as a characteristic design from the oeuvre of architect W.C. Mulder and due to its ensemble value with the adjoining structures by the same architect on the Plantsoen.
