Inleiding

Introduction

The perimeter buildings of the BethlehemsHOFJE were built in 1897 by K. de Boer Hzn. in the Neo-Dutch Renaissance building style, around the nucleus from 1660 which is already protected as a national monument (no. 25106). In the reasoned description of the nucleus, the small gateway is also included. In the interior courtyard there is a double pump. Originally the hofje was called De Houcksteen of the Mennonite Community. In 1810, however, the Mennonite Community had to give up the Bethlehemshofje on the Langegracht. The residents of the hofje, the name and the gable stone moved to the Levendaal. In 1897 the perimeter buildings of that time were replaced by the current buildings. The front facade of the perimeter buildings forms part of the southern facade wall at the Levendaal. The hofje is located in the protected townscape.

Description

The perimeter buildings of the hofje consist of an elongated building volume at the Levendaal and a short rectangular block, perpendicular to it at the corner of the Levendaal and the Kraaierstraat. The elongated symmetrical building volume contains four dwellings and is raised over two storeys under a hipped roof with grey darkened Tuile-du-Nord tiles. The small gateway to the nucleus of the hofje is located in the central risalit of this block under a transverse gable with a stepped gable. On the east side, perpendicular to this building volume, stands a section of two storeys under a gabled roof with grey Old Dutch tiles. Behind the stepped gable of this section are two dwellings.

The facades are constructed above a sandstone plinth in red brick with plastered speck joints, closing and setting stones with diamond points, corbels, ornaments and a drip moulding. The drip moulding on the ground floor is executed in sandstone. Basket arches above the straight-edged sash windows with muntins on the ground floor, segmental arches on the upper floor, round arches above panel doors. Lintels above the windows in the stepped gables. Ornamental brickwork in arch vaults and in the frieze below the overhanging gutter.

The small gateway consists of a round arch-shaped passage in a sandstone frame with pilasters, spandrils and a keystone. Above it a stone with the inscription 'Bethlehem anno 1631' between two volutes under a pediment with the inscription 'den Houcksteen'. On either side of the gateway are windows with wrought-iron grilles. On the inside of the gate is a wall clad with wood. On the ridge of the roof are brick chimneys; in the roof plane at the Levendaal are small roof dormers with shutters with hourglasses, under hipped rooflets with zinc in Maas covering and a finial.

In the houses of the perimeter buildings, among other things, beam floors, black and white tile floors in the hallways and narrow spiral stairs with a newel post to the roof have been preserved.

Valuation

The perimeter buildings of the Bethlehemshofje are of general importance because of the cultural-historical value due to the role that the hofjes have played in the socio-economic and religious history of the Netherlands and in particular in Leiden.

The perimeter buildings are also of general importance because of their architectural-historical value due to the Neo-Dutch Renaissance building style.

From an urban planning perspective, the building is of great significance thanks to its prominent location at the Levendaal. Moreover, the perimeter buildings form the only facade on the outside of the Bethlehemshofje.

The exterior of the perimeter buildings is exceptionally well-preserved, and some characteristic components of the interior have been preserved.
