Inleiding
Oorspronkelijk drie, in 1927 naar ontwerp van de Haagse architect F.L.J. Lourijsen gebouwde WINKELS met BOVENWONINGEN. De winkels zijn samengevoegd bij een - naar ontwerp van F. Wildschut uitgevoerde - verbouwing in 1933, toen er een groentewinkel van het kruideniersconcern de Gruyter werd gevestigd. De begane grond heeft anno 1996 zijn oorspronkelijke winkelfunctie en is in gebruik als kantoor. De op een hoek, bij een kruispunt gesitueerde winkel-woningen zijn gebouwd in een aan de expressionistische, aan de Amsterdamse School verwante bouwstijl. Het gebouw maakt deel uit van het beschermde stadsgezicht Leiden en vormt een in stedebouwkundig opzicht belangrijk ensemble met het aan de andere kant van de Korevaarstraat staande pand Gangetje 2- 14/Korevaarstraat 2-4.
Omschrijving
Het vanuit een onregelmatige plattegrond, voornamelijk in schone baksteen en natuursteen opgetrokken gebouw heeft drie bouwlagen onder platte daken. Alle vensters zijn rechtgesloten en voorzien van de oorspronkelijke stalen ramen.
Het deel van het gebouw aan de Hoge Woerd heeft een gevelpartij met verspringende geveldelen. Het terugliggende rechter deel heeft een hoger opgaande, loodrecht op de hoofdvorm staande zijmuur. In de gevelpartij hier links van staat een oorspronkelijke, rechtgesloten deur onder een luifel van grindbeton. De terugliggende deur, die de toegang naar de woonverdiepingen is, heeft in de rechter hoek een om de hoek lopend, tussen rollagen staand portaalvenster. Boven de deur, op de eerste verdieping staat een reeks van drie smalle, recht boven elkaar geplaatste vensters (traplichten) met stalen ramen en één gemeenschappelijke onderdorpel. De risalerende linker gevelpartij heeft een iets hoger opgaande rechter zijmuur. De winkelpui in dit geveldeel heeft een plint van gepolijste porfier. De glasdeur is voorzien van een bovenlicht. Het grote etalageruim staat hier links van. Hier iets boven ligt een betonnen puibalk. De liggende vensters op de eerste en de tweede verdieping zijn identiek aan elkaar en voorzien van een onregelmatige roedenverdeling. De gevel heeft een deklijst van grès met rechthoekige uitstulpingen. Rechts van voornoemde gevelpartij bevindt zich de ronde hoek van de lange, gebogen gevel aan de Korevaarstraat. Deze gevel heeft een over de gehele breedte doorgetrokken winkelpui. De pui is verdeeld in elf gevelopeningen, met penanten van blokken ruwe hardsteen en boven plinten van gepolijste porfier staande deur- en raamkozijnen van geel metaal (brons?). De onder een bovenlicht staande deur is voorzien van een zijlicht (rechts). De winkelpui heeft een doorlopende, uitkragende puibalk van grindbeton. Beide verdiepingen bevatten per bouwlaag twintig, tussen doorgetrokken onderdorpel en betonnen latei staande vensters met een onregelmatige roedenverdeling. De raamverdeling in de vensters op de eerste verdieping is spiegelbeeldig aan die op de tweede verdieping. De gevel wordt beëindigd door een op een teruggemetselde baksteenlaag liggende rand van staande koppen en strekken met een deklijst van grès tegels, zoals die op de gevel aan de Hogewoerd. De gevel aan de Korevaarstraat wordt afgesloten door een vertikaal, vanuit een onregelmatige ovale plattegrond opgetrokken, torenachtig bouwdeel met trappenhuis. De gewelfde gevel van de "traptoren" heeft op de begane grond een deur onder een over de gehele gevelbreedte doorgetrokken, uitkragende betonnen latei. Rechtsboven de latei wordt de hoek beaccentueerd door eveneens betonnen hoekaccenten. In de linker ronding staat een hoog en smal traplicht met een invulling van glas-in-lood. De "traptoren" heeft aan de bovenkant een betonnen overstek, die een deur naar het platte dak overluifeld. De gevelbeëindiging van dit bouwdeel is als die van de andere gevels. De rechter zijgevel van het gebouw loopt schuin weg naar achteren en bevat diverse rechtgesloten gevelopeningen onder rollaag.
Waardering
Het complex winkels met bovenwoningen is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuurhistorische en architectuurhistorische waarde als een goed en karakteristiek voorbeeld van expressionistische interbellum architectuur, vanwege het bijzondere ontwerp en het materiaalgebruik. Voorts is het complex van stedebouwkundig belang vanwege de situering en heeft het ensemblewaarde vanwege de sterke samenhang met het pand Gangetje 2-14/ Korevaarstraat 2-4, waarmee het de toegang tot de Korevaarstraat markeert. Originally three SHOPS WITH FLATS ABOVE, built in 1927 after designs by The Hague architect F.L.J. Lourijsen. The shops were combined during a 1933 renovation carried out to designs by F. The building, erected from an irregular floor plan, is constructed principally in fair-faced brickwork and ashlar, with three storeys under flat roofs. All windows are straight-headed and provided with original steel frames.
The section of the building on Hoge Woerd has a facade with projecting facade elements. The recessed right section has a higher rising, vertically oriented side wall perpendicular to the main form.
