Inleiding

Introduction

ROLBASCULE BRIDGE dating from 1929-1930 in the style of the Amsterdam School, main component of the complex the Grote Havenbrug.

Description

The substructure of the rolbasule bridge consists of a reinforced concrete cellar, the superstructure of riveted iron beams with an asphalted wooden deck. Abutments of rammed concrete, clad with granite and red brick. The bridge has a span of one opening with a navigation width of 11.17 metres and navigation height of 1.27 metres. The bridge deck is 14.50 metres wide, with a carriageway of 9 metres and two pavements of 2.75 metres.

Three of the quay walls of the abutments are curved, one forms a straight line. Steps in the curve of the abutment between the bridge and the transformer building with urinal provide access to an entrance to the cellar below the bridge. In the cellar is the counterweight of the rolbasule. To the right of door three blocked-up windows.

Wraught iron stair rail, railings on the bridge, two double closing gates and railings on bollards on the quay walls, according to the design principles of the Amsterdam School. Both standing and horizontal bond in brickwork.

Rough and carved granite blocks as chamfer stones, coping stones and decorative stones. Decorative wrought iron holders of the original lanterns on abutments directly beside bridge.

Valuation

The Grote Havenbrug is of general importance because of the cultural and architectural-historical value because of the typology and design in the building style of the Amsterdam School.

Urbanistically the bridge is of importance because of the visually defining location at a point where four waterways meet and because of the visual and functional relation with the transformer building with urinal and the bridge keeper's cottage with police post.

The bridge is virtually intact.
