Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Impressive T-FARMHOUSE with attached barns, called 'Huis Dijk', probably dating from the years 1870-1885. The complex is located on the west side of Ravenstraat in the hamlet of Oud-Dijk. The current farmhouse, situated on an old building plot, has a manor-house-like front section that is executed in the style of Eclecticism characteristic of the building period, in which influences of Neo-Classicism still predominantly persist. The rear house and barns are provided with articulation through pilaster strips and dentil courses with drop motifs, which is characteristic of many late nineteenth-century farmhouses in the Liemers and the Ooypolder near Nijmegen. Both the farmhouse type and the detailing are closely related to farmhouses such as those found in the area of the Duffelt near Cleve as well as in the area on the other side of the Rhine near Emmerich. In front of the house is a garden with lawn and old trees including a beech tree approximately 200 years old. At the road stand two brick columns, each fitted with a tent-roof-shaped plastered covering with a spherical top, of which the left one is fitted with a stone bearing the inscription HUIS and the right one is fitted with a stone bearing the inscription DIJK. These columns mark the beginning of a drive lined with plane trees. The 'Huis Dijk' played an important role in the reclamation of the surrounding area. Nowadays a veterinary practice is established in the barn adjacent to the front section, for which purposes the interior and the front facade of this barn have been adapted.
Description
The farmhouse is built on a U-shaped GROUND PLAN with on the east side at the level of the rear house two barns attached in L-shape and decreasing in height, of which the second lowest barn is situated parallel to the rear house. The two-storey front section is provided with a hipped roof covered with newly improved Dutch tiles with brick chimneys built on both ridge ends, while the rear house is provided with a substantial pitched gable roof covered with smoked and red Mulden tiles. The two attached barns are each provided with a gabled roof covered with smoked Mulden tiles whereby the roof of the barn adjoining the rear house is truncated and has one roof plane provided with corrugated iron sheets. The facades are built up in brick, laid in cross bond. The front section has a plastered plinth while the remaining facades are provided with a lightly projecting, terminated by a fillet course plinth. The block-shaped FRONT SECTION has a plastered plinth with recessed false joints and is further provided with plastered corner pilasters. These are blocked on the ground floor and on the first floor provided with deeply recessed panels rounded at the top. The ground floor and the first floor are separated by a profiled cordon course. The facades are terminated by a main cornice consisting of a plastered architrave course, a plastered frieze with deeply recessed panels and circular motifs and finally a corniced profiled cornice. The front facade is symmetrically arranged and five bays wide whereby the entrance is located in the middle bay. This is marked by pilasters as described above. The plastered ground floor of this bay has an internal porch that is marked by half-columns on either side and the entrance is accessed by means of a number of hardstone steps. The high double entrance door is provided with panels and cast-iron grille panels. Above the door is a semi-circular single-pane fanlight. The windows, terminated by segmental arches, have rear panes with sash windows on the ground floor and six-pane sash windows on the first floor. In the plinth of the two left bays are two-part basement lights. These are executed blind in the two right bays. The side facades of the front section are three bays wide. The LEFT SIDE FACADE of the FRONT SECTION has three arched two-part basement light openings of which the middle basement light is executed blind. On the ground floor and the first floor are windows as in the front facade with the exception of the middle bay of the ground floor and the right bay of the first floor where blind windows are located. The basement lights of the RIGHT SIDE FACADE of the FRONT SECTION are all executed blind. The windows of both the left and the middle bay are executed blind.
The SIDE FACADES of the REAR HOUSE show traces of alterations in several places. The side facades comprise eight bays separated from each other by pilaster strips. Each bay, with the exception of the bays described in more detail below, has two coupled stable window openings terminated by segmental arches whereby the original iron stable windows have been replaced by concrete four-pane stable windows. The RIGHT SIDE (WEST) FACADE has in the left bay a cramped small door with a two-pane fanlight and one cast-iron multi-pane stable window. The second bay has a double half-door terminated by a segmental arch. The third bay is provided with a stable door opening cut in in more recent times. The small stable door located in the fifth bay (of which the arrangement is the same as that of the first bay) is lowered. Against the three right bays of the LEFT (EAST) FACADE a barn is attached. Both in the third and in the fifth bay are located a small stable door and a stable window. The REAR (SOUTH) FACADE of the rear house is asymmetrically arranged and is provided with corner pilaster strips that continue along the slanting sides of the pointed gable. The facade has the characteristically left-positioned half-door opening for this region, terminated by a segmental arch, with a double half-door. Furthermore the facade has on the ground floor a concrete stable window terminated by a segmental arch, a half-door opening cut in with ventilation openings cut in on either side and at the far right an original small stable door.
In the middle of the facade is a slightly arched double hayloft door. The gable top is provided with two round multi-pane cast-iron stable windows. The FRONT FACADE of the BARN which functions as an intermediate element has been altered and is now provided with three substantial disturbing cut-in window openings. The rear facade of this barn still has a small stable door and three stable window openings in which glass panes are fitted. The left side facade of the barn has pilaster strips as in the facade of the rear house and further has a small stable door, three stable windows, a hayloft door and a round multi-pane cast-iron loft window. The barn attached against this intermediate element has side facades spanning four bays and in each bay provided with a cast-iron arched small stable window below which there was originally each time a manure hatch. In the east facade these openings are sealed and the left bay furthermore has a small stable door. The rear facade is provided with a small stable door, a hayloft door and a round cast-iron gable top window. The relatively well-preserved INTERIOR has several original components. The following text describes a number of interior components but does not intend to be a complete enumeration. The front section has a central passage with vestibule which is covered with hexagonal tiles in the colours black, grey and ochre executed with a dice motif. Between the vestibule and the stairwell is a wall in which a high double door with a semi-circular fanlight is incorporated. The double door is provided with wooden underpanels and a diamond-shaped glazing bar division with a filling of inter alia muslin glass. The semi-circular fanlight is likewise provided with a diamond-shaped glazing bar division. The original stairwell with cast-iron balusters is still present. To the left of the passage are a room and a modernised kitchen between which is a basement stair. The two cellars located below the left bay of the front section are provided with barrel vaults. To the right of the passage were originally three rooms. These nowadays form a single space through the largely removal of the partition walls. In the front rooms are still black marble fireplace mantels with bosom sections provided with stuccoed pilasters and capitals. The left front room still has interior shutters. The stucco ceiling of the right front room is, in contrast to that of the left front room, provided with an ornamented centrepiece. Remarkable is the fire passage that separates the front section from the rear house. Evaluation
Distinguished T-FARMHOUSE built in eclecticism style, dating from the years 1870-1885, with attached barns called 'Huis Dijk'.
Architectural-historical values:
- The relatively well-preserved farmhouse forms a good example of a manor farmhouse with a stately front section that is executed in the style of Eclecticism which here still stands strongly in the tradition of Neo-Classicism. As such the farmhouse has rarity value within the region of the Liemers.
- The farmhouse is of importance because of the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design as well as the special ornamentation and the still present relationship between exterior and interior. This is expressed inter alia in the detailing of the monumental front section provided with plastered pilasters, the facades of the rear house and attached barns provided with pilaster strips and dentil courses and various interior elements such as tile floors and ornamented stucco ceilings.
Urban-planning values:
- The farmhouse is of particular importance for the development of the countryside west of Didam in the second half of the nineteenth century because of the land reclamations that were carried out on the initiative of the owner of 'Huis Dijk'.
- The farmhouse is of particular importance for the appearance of the countryside west of Didam through the substantial building mass and the character of the total complex which is reinforced by the tall-growing trees in the garden in front of the front section.
Cultural-historical values:
- The farmhouse is of typological importance as an example of the development that farmhouse construction underwent in this area in the years 1850-1940. Both with regard to the arrangement and the construction of the rear house there is a separate development that also occurs in the Ooypolder near Nijmegen and which is clearly related to the developments in nineteenth-century farmhouse construction in the adjacent German areas such as in particular in the region of the Duffelt near Cleve.
- The 'Huis Dijk' played an important role in the reclamation of the area south-west of Didam and thus forms a representative example of the developments in the agricultural sector in the second half of the nineteenth century in the Liemers.
