Inleiding

Introduction

This detached VILLA with the original name "Kamp Links" (now Sunny Home) was built in 1915 for and by the architect CHRIS WEGERIF (1859-1920). The residence is situated in a wooded setting in the west of Apeldoorn, west of the Jachtlaan in the villa park "Berg en Bos" (formerly "Het Loo"). C.H. Wegerif lived here with his wife Agathe Gravenstein until his death in 1920. In the sash window of the rear facade is a trapezoidal stone with the text "Wegerif - Fritz - Chris - Klein - anno MCMXV". Probably his son Chris Wegerif jr. is mentioned here together with his friend Fritz Klein. A border is chiselled into the stone with a hammer depicted centrally. This symbol also appears on one of the window knobs on the inside.

Villa "Kamp Links" was the first of a series of striking properties in similar architecture: "Halve Maan" (Coniferenlaan 3; 1917), "Serena" (1e Beukenlaan 9; 1916) and "Edera" (Eikenlaan 10; 1918). The architecture of "Kamp Links" distinguishes itself from the average type of villa in the "Berg en Bos" district through a simple rectangular main form, white-painted rough stuccoed facades, trapezoidal windows and the use of purple and light pastel coloured leaded glass in a geometric pattern. The frames of the wall openings are covered with green-painted glass fibre. The geometric pattern of the leaded glass consists of a vertical central strip with descending diagonal lines on either side. The garden design does not fall under the protection.

Description

The villa consisting of two storeys, a basement and an attic is closed off by a gabled roof covered with red improved Dutch tiles. The two end gables and the gutters are clad with slate shingles. Below the terrace on the south side is a storage space. On the ridge are two plastered rectangular chimney stacks with four and five flue openings respectively. The stacks end in a red saddle ridge. In the slope of the gabled roof are three new roof windows and a new brick chimney, which like the garden design do not fall under the protection.

In the long EAST FACADE (street side), parallel to the ridge direction, on the left is a trapezoidal portico with a flat roof. In this portico is the entrance to the kitchen. The entrance consists of a divisible wooden door with a green-painted, concrete frame. To the right of the portico are two wooden sash windows with inward-opening casements and a leaded glass fanlight. Between them is a square drop window. In both side facades (east and west) of the underbuild of the balcony is a trapezoidal leaded glass window.

Centrally in the facade is a rectangular leaded glass window behind which the staircase is situated. On the first floor on either side of this is a window opening with inward-opening casements. The windows have two horizontal glazing bars at the top which cross with two vertical glazing bars. Directly above these windows is the gutter clad with slate shingles.

On the ground floor of the SOUTH FACADE (left side facade) from left to right is a double wooden door with leaded glass fanlight, a square leaded glass window and a new, horizontal kitchen window. On the floor are two sash windows identical to the windows on the ground floor of the east facade. In the gable top is a window with two inward-opening casements (12-pane). Directly above the window the gable top is clad with slate. This cladding consists of two rows of slate shingles which pass into slates in diminishing courses.

The WEST FACADE on the wooded side can be divided into three regular bays with the entrance section in the central bay. The left and right bays are identical to the window bay at the far right in the east facade. The entrance section consists of a divisible wooden front door in a trapezoidal portico which is accessible on one side. The leaded glass fanlight of the front door is located above the flat roof of the portico. The window on the floor is identical to the windows in the left and right bays.

The NORTH FACADE (right side facade) ends in a gable top and has on the ground floor two double balcony doors with leaded glass fanlights and door shutters. Also on the floor are two double balcony doors, without shutters and with a slightly lower fanlight. The gable top termination is identical to that of the south facade. The floor has a balcony which is supported by two side walls and two centrally placed columns. These columns have a high square base and a square block capital. On the architrave stands the new name "Sunny home" instead of the original name "Kamp Links". The layout of the INTERIOR is symmetrical in design. Behind the central main entrance is the hall with a front room on the left and a study on the right. At the end of the hall is the authentic staircase with the living room on the left and the kitchen on the right. On the floor on the left and right are two identical bedrooms each with two fitted cupboards. The bathroom is situated centrally. It has the width of the landing. The layouts of the kitchen and the front and living rooms have been altered. In the front room a new fireplace has been installed with a new flue. The bathroom has been enlarged at the expense of a bedroom. All ceilings have been lowered with the retention of the original beam layers.

Valuation

Detached VILLA from 1915, built by CHRIS WEGERIF.

- Of architectural historical value as a good and well-preserved example of a residence in a building style typical of architect Wegerif. Wegerif built the house for himself and was inspired by, among others, the New Art, the Arts and Crafts, the Art Nouveau and the Viennese Secession. The residence occupies an important place in his oeuvre and is, together with the surviving original interior elements, of architectural historical importance. Villa "Kamp Links" was the first of a series of properties striking for Apeldoorn in similar architecture: "Halve Maan" (Coniferenlaan 3; 1917), "Serena" (1e Beukenlaan 9; 1916) and "Edera" (Eikenlaan 10; 1918).

- Of urban planning value through the detached situation in the wooded setting west of the Jachtlaan in the villa park Berg en Bos (formerly Het Loo). This area is characterized by the free positioning of monumental objects, surrounded by spacious gardens.

- Of cultural historical value as an example of a well-considered overall design in which various forms of applied art have been brought together. The overall design is typical of the era in which this house was designed. Wegerif lived in the property between 1915 and 1920. The property has cultural historical value as a recognizable element of a social development. It was built as housing for a new and wealthy urban elite, who preferred to settle in substantial villas in spaciously laid out and in this case systematically developed, romantically designed villa districts. The Berg en Bos district is a good example of such a villa district. There is also cultural historical value in the fact that Wegerif's designs bear a clearly recognizable signature and due to the limited geographic distribution can be considered typical of the municipality of Apeldoorn.

Wegerif's work bears the stamp of the New Art. Contractor, architect, furniture and interior designer Wegerif had a great interest in Art Nouveau, the Viennese Secession and the English Arts and Crafts.

He was an advocate of the integration of applied arts in architecture. Together with Thorn Prikker and John Uiterwijk he founded "Arts and Crafts" on the Kneuterdijk in The Hague in 1893, after which around 1900 he began to design furniture himself. His wife Agathe Gravenstein also became involved with the "Arts and Crafts" because of her successful batik work. Thorn Prikker executed her designs. As a producer and designer of batik fabrics, after a disagreement she opened an atelier on the Kalverstraat in Apeldoorn. Wegerif incorporated her batik and tile tableaux into his designs. Beside Chris Wegerif, his cousin, Ahasverus Hendricus Wegerif (1888-1963), was also a well-known architect. Both of them designed various properties in Apeldoorn, independently of each other.
