Inleiding

Introduction

MAIN BUILDING of the SEMINARY, located west of the Arnhemseweg in Apeldoorn. The building forms part of a complex, built in the period 1933-1935 according to designs by architect J.M. van Hardeveld, with influences from the Delft School and the Nieuwe Bouwen, whereby he applies steel windows and a concrete structure in combination with brick facades and gently sloping gabled roofs covered with tiles.

Description

The detached education and boarding house building for the accommodation of teachers, students, sisters and male lay staff is composed of a FRONT BUILDING (east wing), adjoining H-SHAPED FLOOR PLAN (north, south and west wings), a LAUNDRY HOUSE (with a house for male service staff) and a SISTERS' HOUSE. The laundry house and the sisters' house are at right angles to the north wing.

The red brick facades with ashlar window frames and rolled joint are all constructed in Dutch bond. In the wall openings with a yellow artificial stone (terracotta) chamfered edge are predominantly rectangular steel windows with geometric glazing bars, with the exception of the wooden windows of the sisters' house. The exterior of the main building is authentic with the exception of some plastic frames and an added row of steel windows on the attic storey of the H-shaped floor plan. These windows were installed as a result of installing an intermediate floor in the ten-metre-high attic storey whereby the concrete student chambers were removed. The H-shaped floor plan has since consisted of four storeys instead of three. The hall in the north wing of the H-shaped floor plan has since consisted of three storeys instead of two. Only the north wing has a basement storey. Originally the storeys of the H-shaped floor plan from bottom to top were approximately five, six and ten metres high respectively. In the 1970s lowered ceilings were installed on the ground floor and first storey due to high heating costs. The interior of the main building is enriched in the public spaces with stained-glass windows, glazed brick and tiled wainscoting.

Stained-glass windows are located in the public spaces, such as the hall, staircases and in the fanlights of the entrance arrangements. Green glazed brick is used for the pillars and wainscoting in the left corridor of the front building accessible to visitors of students' families. For the wainscoting in the (processional) corridor in the student section (H-shaped floor plan) glazed tiles were used, in the public front building the wainscoting consists of sand-coloured tiles.

The FRONT BUILDING (east wing) lies parallel to the Arnhemseweg at a distance of one hundred metres from the entrance to the garden. The east wing consists of three storeys with above it a gently sloping gabled roof, covered with dampened newly improved Dutch tiles. The light openings are distributed regularly horizontally and vertically over the facade consisting of approximately forty window bays. On the ground floor there are tall narrow windows consisting of a casement window above which is a fixed eight-pane window with a double central glazing bar. A cornice separates the ground floor from the second and third storey. On the first and second storeys there are rectangular, tall windows with steel glazing bars. These windows consist of a casement window with fanlight. The casement window has an extra vertical glazing bar to the left and right of the centre. The five-pane fanlight with double horizontal glazing bar has a drop sash on the outer sides.

The regularity of the facade is interrupted by a taller and a shorter section at the far left of the facade, with on the rear a covered walkway, which bordered one side of the former playing field. In the shorter section, consisting of one storey, was the former music room. The taller section is five window bays wide and consists of three storeys and an attic storey. In the right window bay there is a projecting building section that begins on the first storey and ends in a Flemish gable with gabled roof. The extension at the far right of the facade is three window bays wide and two storeys high with a balcony on the third storey. Behind the extension was the former refectory for the teachers. Almost centrally situated is the emphasised entrance arrangement with on the left on the ground floor eight former loggias and on the right a three-sided oriel window. Behind the loggias are the rooms for visits of students' family members. The round arches of the former loggias have a sandstone base where plastic frames are placed in the building line. To the right of the entrance are on the ground floor the rooms of the former president of the seminary, recognisable by the sandstone three-sided oriel window with a recessed balcony door on the first storey. On the first and second storeys were the study and sleeping rooms of the teachers.

The entrance arrangement is emphasised by the use of Maulbronner sandstone with in the gabled roof two small roof windows and an Angelus tower covered with slates in German bond. On the ground floor to the left and right of the recessed, modified main entrance with authentic stained-glass fanlight is a brick pilaster with sandstone banded courses. The pilasters support a balcony with a closed sandstone balustrade. On the first storey on either side of the recessed double door with fanlight and side windows is a stylised sandstone pillar with capital. The three paired windows in the third storey are framed in a rectangular sandstone field. Below these windows formerly stood the coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Utrecht sculpted by Auguste Falise with on either side of the coat of arms Saint Aloysius and Saint Borromeus sculpted by Wim Harzing. On the ground floor, to the left of the entrance, is the foundation stone laid by Joannes Jansen, Archbishop of Utrecht, 8 June 1933.

The H-SHAPED FLOOR PLAN consists of a north and south wing connected halfway to each other by a west wing. The facades of the H-shaped floor plan end in a mezzanine with above it a gabled roof with glazed roof light. The gabled roof is covered with dampened newly improved Dutch tiles. The H-shaped floor plan was the student section. On the ground floor were the study, festive and recreation halls with on the first storey the classrooms and on the second storey the sleeping rooms.

The H-shaped floor plan together with the east wing encloses an INNER COURTYARD of 35 x 50m.

In the north facade of the inner courtyard are on the ground floor tall narrow windows with eight-pane windows with to the left and right a double glazing bar. Behind these windows lies the (processional) corridor. The three-metre-deep dwarf gallery on the first storey consists of round arches with a rolled joint and a sandstone base. The arches rest on square brick pillars with a sandstone basement. Above the gallery are open terraces adjoining the sleeping halls with above them the mezzanine under the gabled roof with roof light.

The ground floor of the east facade of the inner courtyard has the same layout interrupted by a central double steel door with artificial stone surround. In front of the door is a step ladder consisting of five granite steps. On the first storey are rectangular, tall windows consisting of a casement frame with division 2x2 with three central glazing bars and a four-pane fanlight with two central glazing bars. On the second storey are half-round windows with lowered middle section and geometric glazing bars.

The south facade is the mirror image of the north facade of the inner courtyard.

On the ground floor of the west facade of the inner courtyard are taller rectangular, tall windows. These windows consist of an upper (2/3) and lower section (1/3) separated from each other by a sandstone threshold. The casement window with three bundled vertical central glazing bars below the threshold is located at the height of a horizontal yellow brick band. The eight-pane window with three bundled central glazing bars above the threshold consists of a fixed lower section with above it two drop sashes. The window section above the sandstone threshold on the ground floor repeats itself on the first storey. On the second storey is the row of added windows identical to the window section below the sandstone threshold on the ground floor. Centrally is a modified door. The layout of the south facade of the SOUTH WING is identical to the east side of the inner courtyard with the exception of the entrance arrangements emphasised by the use of glazed brick. The central entrance arrangement consists of a modified door with stained-glass fanlight with on the left and right a wooden double door. On the first storey is a triangular oriel window above which is a balcony. The layout of the west facade of the WEST WING is almost identical to the north facade of the inner courtyard. On the open terraces is the former bathing facility of the seminary.

The hall in the NORTH WING was originally constructed of two storeys and currently consists of three storeys. The south facade of the north wing is characterised by six centred stained-glass windows with division 7x3 with double vertical glazing bars on the ground floor. Above the stained-glass windows is a blocked gallery consisting of six segmental arches with below each arch an added casement window. Above the blocked gallery the mezzanine is missing. To the left and right of the segmental arches gallery the casement windows continue in the same rhythm. Below the stained-glass windows is an extension for its function as a hall. The north facade of the hall is identical to the south facade with the exception of the segmental arches gallery.

On the north side, at right angles to the north wing, stands the LAUNDRY HOUSE with adjoining a HOUSE for the male SERVICE STAFF. The window layout of the north facade adjoining the inner courtyard between laundry house and chapel is identical to the east facade of the inner courtyard with the exception of the windows in the second storey. In the second storey are rectangular windows with division 5x2 with three bundled central glazing bars. The laundry house consists of one storey with gabled roof covered with dampened newly improved Dutch tiles. In the right facade of the laundry house are six two-pane basement windows with in the same axis a three-part window with a drop sash as fanlight. The laundry house transitions into the HOUSE FOR LAY STAFF consisting of two storeys and an attic with gabled roof covered with dampened newly improved Dutch tiles. In the facades of the house with a T-shaped floor plan alternating use is made of wooden and steel windows. Larger windows on the ground floor, smaller on the storey. In the gable facades a round window. On the front right of centre the entrance with step ladder and wooden semicircular door. On the rear two wooden access doors.

The SISTERS' HOUSE forms together with the north wing and laundry house a second inner courtyard. The sisters cared for the domestic services. They had management of the kitchen and the sick bay. The kitchen is characterised by the white glazed brick at the height of the ashlar window frame with rolled joint. In the sisters' house wood is used for the window and wall openings in contrast to the rest of the main building. The stained-glass windows in the sisters' chapel are by Kocken from Utrecht.

Valuation

Main building of the seminary, built in the period 1933-1935 on behalf of the Archdiocese of Utrecht according to designs by J.M. van Hardeveld.

- Of architectural historical value because of the architecture of J.M. van Hardeveld, influenced by the Delft School and the Nieuwe Bouwen, whereby he applies steel windows and a concrete structure in combination with brick facades and gently sloping gabled roofs covered with tiles.

- Of town planning value because of the deliberate choice for Apeldoorn, as reasonably centrally located in the Netherlands. In the period 1850-1940 Apeldoorn is the central point of the Roman Catholic church whereby many Catholic institutions, including the minor seminary, decide to establish themselves there. Moreover, a deliberate choice was made for the location of the complex in a quiet, healthy park-like environment on the edge of Apeldoorn with sufficient space for the placement of all necessary provisions for education and boarding.

- Of cultural historical value because of the placement of a Roman Catholic minor seminary in predominantly Protestant Apeldoorn. Also valuable is the art historical contribution made by artists such as A. Falise, W. Harzing and Kocken.
