Inleiding
Katholieke PAROCHIEKERK, H.H.
H.M.M. Postel (in zuidzijde viering).
Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
Catholic PARISH CHURCH, H.H. Fabianus and Sebastianus, built in 1923-1924 after a design by the Breda architect J.G.A. van Dongen jr. (1896-1973) in an expressionistic style resembling the Amsterdam School.
The church H.H. Fabianus and Sebastianus was van Dongen's first commission as an independent architect in Apeldoorn. His revolutionary ideas are already evident in it. The altar section is separated from the nave by a dark crossing behind which the brightly lit choir received extra emphasis. In the church building the parabolic shape of the diaphragm arches in the nave recurs in the portal; the doors and in the archvolts. But also in the crowning of the church tower. The building is not only clear in conception but also through the use of brick in fair-faced brickwork. The first design of the church was never executed but gave in plan a longitudinal nave with trapezium shape, the roof rose in steps and the covering of the choir was continued as a church tower. The design would also have distinguished itself in our time.
Contributors: Stained glass windows from 1930 designed by the sculptor/painter Albert J.J. Verschuuren (1887-1953) of Oosterhout (N.Br) (on the north side of the crossing) and by the brothers H.M.M. Postel (on the south side of the crossing).
Description
A basilica-type CHURCH BUILDING on a rectangular ground plan with projection of the entrance and choir sections. The nave comprises nine bays of which the yellow brick long facades curve inward. The nave is flanked by two lower side aisles and covered by an imposing gabled roof. The roof covering consists of a mixture of red and smothered Roman roof tiles. Raised masonry from the nave interrupts the roof panels and thus forms the clerestory at five bays. The clerestory is braced by six wall buttresses resembling flying arches. These so-called flying arches are covered by three rows of roof tiles. Per bay there are always three lancet windows of equal size. The roof of the two westernmost bays which are provided with only red Roman tiles is lower than the roof of the nave. On the east side there is an openwork elliptical tower crown on the roof ridge which rests on a brick base.
Above the clerestories and the side aisles, roof gutters are hidden behind parapets. The rainwater pipes which are located in the middle of each side aisle bay create a regular rhythm of the side facade. The low wall with railings placed in front screens off a wide gutter which is situated lower than ground level for drainage. In the FRONT FACADE, a broad gable topped with shoulder pieces, the entrance section is placed symmetrically. The entrance section with a flattened pointed arch form contains an internal portal. On this open three wooden church doors of which the central one is a double door, provided with heavy iron fittings, connecting to the central nave of the church. The clamped doors are provided with planks which repeat the shape of the pointed arch form of the portal and of the stepped recesses in the wall laid in half-brick courses. The shutter doors rotate on rails in the brick floor laid in mosaic masonry.
On the side face, a pointed arch-shaped door is incorporated on each side. This is placed under a buttress in the portal vault and set in an equally pointed arch-shaped frame that rests on sandstone newels and a sill. The doors are clamped with a Latin cross.
Through the protruding roof of the portal (covered with copper plates) the entrance section is strongly emphasized. This is flanked, like the choir section, by small square projections.
The facade rests on a base which projects forward and is provided with a hardstone sloping coping. A half-brick course closes off this zone.
A step of grey brick in block pattern, bordered with an equally half-brick course, follows the offsets of the front facade in the ground plan.
Above the apex of the portal a window is placed in the form of a Latin cross. Through a pointed arch laid in courses in the otherwise closed facade, the form of the entrance section is repeated.
The roof of the portal is offset, like the large gabled roof of the church building, in height.
The sides of the flat-roofed projections on either side of the portal are provided with a window with glass bricks which are placed in block pattern.
In the side aisle wall of the RIGHT SIDE FACADE, per two bays there are two coupled small square windows so that in only the most easterly and westerly bay a single window occurs. The windows contain an irregular pattern of glass brick. They are set back deep in the facade and provided with a sill of glazed tiles.
The wall buttresses between the windows are recessed in the wall plane and have rounded corners. Also through the curving of these wall planes, which partly continue over the buttresses, these are emphasized as plastic screens. The side aisle wall of the two most easterly located bays rises higher than that of the remaining bays.
The clerestory bay is formed by three coupled and recessed lancet windows. The masoned window arches rest on four common sandstone newels. The three window heads are provided with two common sandstone springer stones. The sills of the windows are placed in two layers slanted in courses. The windows are provided with replacement frames of plastic.
At the east end of this right facade, a passage (separate monument number 514488) connects which forms the link with the presbytery house (separate monument number 514488) which is situated to the southeast of the church building.
The LEFT FACADE is nearly identical to the right facade. The choir section at the location of the REAR FACADE is both lower and narrower than the three-aisle nave. Like the choir, the apse is also covered with roof tiles in overlapping tiles. Five angled roof ridge tiles emphasize the polygonal roof finish. The clerestory is identical to that of the nave but possesses five instead of three lancet windows.
Against the adjoining wall of the higher rising nave, along the roof panels of the choir section, there is a half-brick laid stepped gable. From the apex, the masonry continues upward and connects to the brick base of the church tower.
On either side of the choir section there is a flat-roofed building block which on the east side has four coupled pointed arch windows of which the layout corresponds to that of the clerestory in the nave.
The INTERIOR is in reasonably original condition. It concerns a three-aisle church building with narrow side aisles in fair-faced brickwork. Only the vault sections between the diaphragm arches, which have their springing from the ground, are plastered.
In the eastern closing wall of the nave there is a low and narrow pointed arch-shaped vault behind which the crossing is situated. Indirect light enters through stained glass windows. The arch form which closes off the choir from the crossing is again reduced when seen from the west. Through this, attention for the liturgy is directed step by step to the choir.
The narrow side aisles are covered by pointed arch-shaped barrel vaults. Per bay there are two such vaults which are placed alternately one behind the other.
Fine details are found in the (glazed) brickwork and in the sides of the wooden church benches in which the numbers are displayed. The substantial keystones (executed in natural stone) in the transverse arches consist of reliefs of the heads of apostles.
The most important alteration in the past is the (raised) choir and the placement of the altar. Through this, among other things, the red tile floor with black inserts and motifs is no longer visible.
Valuation
Church building by architect J.G.A. van Dongen jr. (1896-1973) in an expressionistic style resembling the Amsterdam School.
- Of architectural historical value as a well and nearly intact preserved example of a church building with strict and simply executed ornamentation, influenced by the architectural design of expressionism and the Amsterdam School.
In the disposition of nave and separated choir section, the church building is certainly worth mentioning as remarkable. Additionally, the large barrel vault of the central nave is of architectural value. The design by one of the most leading architects in Apeldoorn found little imitation nationally.
The building, wholly constructed of brick, stands out for its high aesthetic qualities, such as the impressive gabled roof and the paraboloid forms in interior (diaphragm arches, crossing and choir) and exterior (portal, doors and tower crown).
Also important in the interior are the tile floor, the reliefs in the keystones above the transverse arches and the stained glass windows in the crossing.
- Of urban planning value is the church given its location in the middle of a residential neighbourhood which arose shortly after the time of construction of the church. The church with adjacent presbytery house forms a striking ensemble slightly aside from the Arnhemseweg.
The church building is located in a sight axis from the Arnhemseweg at the head of the Sebastiaanplein. The roadway bends before the church toward the Fabianusstraat. Through this layout the presence of the building is further emphasized in urban planning terms.
- Of cultural historical value is the Catholic church because it was built in predominantly Protestant Apeldoorn. In the second half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century there was a clear increase in buildings which arose from Catholic commissions to promote Catholicism in the Netherlands. In Apeldoorn there are among other examples of this in the church H.H. Fabianus and Sebastianus and the Klein Seminar.
