UNIVERSITEITSGEBOUW (Hygiënisch Laboratorium), gebouwd in 1893 in opdracht van de Rijksgebouwendienst aan de Catharijnesingel, uitgevoerd in Hollandse neorenaissance, naar ontwerp van Rijksbouwmeester J. van Lokhorst.
Omschrijving
Laboratorium met in hoofdopzet twee evenwijdige vleugels tussen topgevels, evenwijdig aan de Catharijnesingel, verbonden door twee wat inspringende haaks hier op staande vleugels die een binnenplaats omsluiten. Aan de linkerzijde zijn twee achtzijdige traptorens toegevoegd. Het in oranjerode baksteen opgetrokken laboratorium heeft twee bouwlagen, het geheel onder een samenstel van zadeldaken gedekt met leien en dakkapellen uitgevoerd als Vlaamse gevels. De 13 traveeën brede voorgevel heeft een drie traveeën brede sterk uitspringende middenrisaliet, waarin de ingang is gesitueerd, opgenomen in een pilasterstelling, waarboven een gevelsteen met stichtingstekst, geflankeerd door twee vrouwenbeelden met symbolen van scholing en twee lezende kinderen, het geheel bekroond met een driehoekig fronton met beeldmerk van de Utrechtse Universiteit en tekstband "SOL IUSTITIA ILLUSTRA NOS", daarboven in de natuurstenen boogvulling van de vensters van de tweede bouwlaag het rijkswapen en beeltenis van regentes Emma en koningin Wilhelmina. De kruisvensters van de eerste bouwlaag hebben geprofileerde vensterneggen en lateien, op de tweede bouwlaag natuurstenen kruisvensters met terugliggende boogtrommels met tegeltableaus of natuurstenen reliëfs welke namen van wetenschappers dragen, omkranst met bloemen, in de boogtrommels van de middenrisaliet afbeeldingen van laboratorium-werkzaamheden. De zijgevels hebben dezelfde uitwerking in hoofdlijnen als de voorgevel. De gevels aan de binnenplaats zijn uitgevoerd in gele baksteen met banden van oranje baksteen, ontlastingsbogen en boogvelden eveneens versierd met oranjerode baksteen.
Interieur met op de begane grond ter ontsluiting van kamers en laboratoria een U-vormige gang met kruisgewelven in gele baksteen, schoongemetselde wanden geleed door pilasters van profielsteen en lambrisering met tegels. De gangen van de verdieping zijn meer sober uitgevoerd. Hal met origineel trappenhuis verlicht door natuurstenen kruisvensters met als biforium uitgevoerd met glas-in-lood ingevulde, bovenlichten.

Laboratory with in its main layout two parallel wings between stepped gables, parallel to the Catharijnesingel, connected by two somewhat recessed perpendicular wings which enclose an inner courtyard. On the left side two octagonal stair towers have been added. The laboratory, constructed in orange-red brickwork, has two storeys, the whole covered with an ensemble of gabled roofs with slate and roof dormers executed as Flemish gables. The 13-bay-wide front elevation has a three-bay-wide strongly projecting central risalit, in which the entrance is situated, set within a pilaster arrangement, above which a foundation stone with inscription, flanked by two female figures with symbols of education and two reading children, the whole crowned with a triangular pediment with emblem of the University of Utrecht and text band "SOL IUSTITIA ILLUSTRA NOS", above this in the natural stone arch infill of the windows of the second storey the state coat of arms and likeness of regent Emma and Queen Wilhelmina. The cross windows of the first storey have profiled window recesses and lintels, on the second storey natural stone cross windows with recessed arch drums with tile tableaux or natural stone reliefs which bear the names of scientists, surrounded with flowers, in the arch drums of the central risalit depictions of laboratory work.
