Inleiding

Introduction

ALMSHOUSE, built in 1861 by the Foundation of Eleëmosynae of Oudmunster. The almshouse, consisting of adjoining rows of dwellings with two short transverse wings, encloses a garden, in which five cast-iron pumps are located, which is separated from the street by a railings fence on a low brick wall.

Description

Almshouse dwellings, laid out on a U-shaped plan, where the long central section is placed parallel to the Wolter Heukelslaan and the short transverse wings are placed at right angles to it. The single-storey dwellings are built in brickwork, under a broken roof, covered with darkened newly improved Old Dutch tiles. The two-aisle dwellings contain in the front facade a panelled door under a fanlight with glazing bars (St. Andrew's cross) and a 3x(1+3) sash window flanked by shutters. Window and door are supported by a lintel. Above the coping line carried on cut consoles, flat-roofed roof dormers are fitted in which a 3x3-pane casement window. The two end facades of the transverse wings executed as spout gables contain a casement frame provided with a herringbone-arched fanlight on the attic storey in place of a roof dormer on the front of the end dwelling. The corners of the facade and the sloping roof line with shoulders are slightly raised in brickwork. At the location of the rear garden a garden wall adjoins these dwellings with a gate. In the garden, besides five cast-iron pumps in hardstone casings, some fine trees are located. The garden is accessed from the street by a railings fence on a brick wall through two swing gates between hardstone columns. The low wall is a continuation of the rendered plinth of the end dwellings and is finished with a natural stone coping stone.

Valuation

ALMSHOUSE (of Eleëmosynae) with pumps and fence, of general importance due to its architectural-historical value as a good and reasonably intact example of a simple and functional building style typical of almshouses. Of cultural-historical value due to its purpose which is connected with poor relief. Of town-planning value due to its location with closed character as well as an autonomous area with specific layout.

Almshouse founded by the Eleëmosynae of Oudmunster for the benefit of Protestant widows.
