Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
On the eastern side of the site, directly on the bank of a dead-end arm of the Raam (a former moat of seventeenth-century fortification works) stands a concrete CASEMATE of the S3a-type, also called a Hedgehog. From the casemate fire could be delivered in a southeasterly direction over the inundated Raam. The casemate dates from around 1939.
Description
The small, reinforced concrete machine gun casemate has a three-sided bevelled front side, in which three loopholes are installed. The casemate had a light front cover of eighty centimetres thick, and a relatively wide field of fire because with a light machine gun through the middle loophole, or that to the side, frontal and flanking fire could be delivered. Due to the large loopholes, however, the casemate was vulnerable to enemy artillery. In the gorge side a low access door is installed. Both door and loopholes are bricked up.
Valuation
The casemate is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the formation of a strategic landscape in the context of national defence shortly before the Second World War; the object is important because of the particular use of materials and the development of military technology before 1940. It has ensemble value as an essential part of a larger whole, the Peel-Raamstelling, which is of cultural-historical importance; it is important because of the high-quality standard of the construction and the historical-spatial relation with waters and soil composition.
