Omschrijving
Inleiding
Omschrijving

Description
Introduction
West of the S3a-casemate stands, directly on the bank of the Raam, on the former seventeenth-century fortification works, a pair of concrete CASEMATES of the B 270a-type, also called flanking concrete casemate. The easternmost example is strategically situated on a small peninsula at the split in the Raam; the western example lies west of the bridge in the Elftweg. From the casemates, flanking fire could be delivered in a south-southeasterly direction over the inundated Raam. The casemates date from 1939-1940.
Description
In the sectors of the Peel-Raam position where the most enemy activity was expected, heavy armed concrete casemates of the B-type were built. Depending on local requirements, these bunkers, equipped with a heavy machine gun, could cover the field of fire in front of or behind the line. In this case, both examples are oriented towards the forward terrain. The casemates have a rectangular floor plan and heavier front protection (120 centimetres) than the S-type. Because the casemate provides flanking fire, the shooting aperture on the front side could be shielded by a heavy concrete 'nose'. In the gorge side there is a small access door. Of the eastern example, unlike the western one, shooting apertures and door are completely bricked up. On the eastern example, traces of the original camouflage painting remain.
Valuation
The casemate is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the formation of a strategic landscape in the context of national defence shortly before the Second World War; the object is important because of the particular use of materials and the technical development of military technology before 1940. It has ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole, the Peel-Raam position, which is of cultural-historical importance; it is important because of the high quality of construction and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions.
