Inleiding

- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling;

- als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel dat architectuurhistorisch en cultuurhistorisch van algemeen belang is;

Introduction

The WAREHOUSE, built in 1898 in Traditional-craft style, formed part of the Douwe Egberts business. It was built in the garden of the townhouse 'Midstraat 99', where the coffee roastery and tobacco-processing room were housed within the building. The premises were owned by the De Jong family, the descendants of Douwe Egberts. Until 1913 most of the business activities took place in the warehouse, thereafter in the factory in Snikzwaag which opened that year. After that the warehouse only housed the tea-packing business, which eventually moved to Snikzwaag in 1933.

Since 1976 the premises have belonged to the museum "Johannes Hesselhuis" and serve as its main building. Johannes Hessel de Jong, later factory director, laid the foundation stone of the warehouse in 1898 at the age of four.

The premises are located on a dead-end canal with landing stage from the Overspitting. In the 1980s a connecting road was laid on the south side of the warehouse between Geelgietersstraat and Lijnbaanstraat, which disconnected the warehouse from the garden of the townhouse. The birthplace of the founder of the business, Egbert Douwes, which stood in Idskenhuizen, was stone by stone rebuilt in 1981 in the garden by the warehouse. The warehouse is reasonably intact and the new museum use has brought few changes. On the north side of the premises a connection has been made with the neighbouring property. This extension, the neighbouring property, the fencing at the passage, as well as the birthplace of Egbert Douwes, fall outside national protection due to insufficient monumental value or insufficiently recent construction.

Description

The warehouse is a rectangular building of three storeys under a mansard roof covered with black corrugated Frisian tiles. The facades are constructed in yellow brick with the exception of the south facade which is executed in dark red brick. Rainwater is collected in a simple downpipe on brackets.

The east side bordering the canal has two double entrance doors at street level, a double door on the upper storey and a double door with hoist beam in a dormer window at the roof. The ground floor has five- and the upper storey has six eight-pane windows in a steel frame with steel glazing bars, a segmental arch and a brick sill. The steel anchors of the upper-storey floors are visible. The west facade is virtually identical to the east facade.

The south facade contains two foundation stones; one laid by Johannes Hessel de Jong on 16 November 1898 and one on the occasion of the opening of the museum on 1 July 1976. On the left in the facade is a double door on the upper storey. The ground floor has four- and the first and second storeys have each three windows, identical to those in the side facades. The facade has a concrete plinth and concrete coping at the roof which rests on two setting stones with a volute motif.

The north facade has on the ground floor an extension which forms a connection with a neighbouring property. The first storey has two- and the second storey has three windows.

The INTERIOR has undergone few alterations. The building is partially compartmentalised, but in such a way that these interventions are removable. The heavy timber structure and wooden storey floors are still present.

Valuation

The warehouse, built in 1898 on Geelgietersstraat in Joure, is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a distinctive expression of socio-economic development;

- as an essential component of a larger whole that is of architectural-historical and cultural-historical importance;

- because of the reasonable integrity of interior and exterior.
