Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Stately Eclectic MANSION with adjoining FACTORY section and OFFICE. The composite building is connected with the history of the Douwe Egberts concern. In 1831 Hessel Douwes, son of Douwe Egberts (1755-1806), purchased a merchant's residence situated on the present-day plot Midstraat 99, from which he operated a wholesale distillery business. His son Johannes Hessel added the neighbouring property, the shop "De Witte Os", in 1871. Behind the residence were a coffee roastery and a tobacco processing workshop. In the night of 14 to 15 October 1881, a fire that ravaged the centre of Joure destroyed the residential house, the coffee roastery and tobacco processing workshop. On 5 May 1882 the foundation stone was laid for a new mansion to be built with integrated coffee roastery and tobacco processing workshop. The property was for many years the residence of the De Jong family, the family name adopted by the descendants of Douwe Egberts. In 1898 a warehouse was built behind the mansion where part of the business activities were relocated. In 1913 all activities moved to a new factory in Snikzwaag, with the exception of the tea-packing works which remained in the warehouse until 1933.
The mansion is situated on the north side of the Midstraat and has an extensive renovation history; nevertheless many original elements have been preserved. A conservatory added to the rear in 1939 falls outside the protection due to insufficient monumental value. With the construction of a connecting road between the Geelgietersstraat and the Lijnbaanstraat, the old garden, which extended to the Overspitting, has been divided in two. For this reason the associated warehouse Geelgietersstraat 1, which stands in the rear part of the garden, is protected as a separate national monument.
Description
The composite building consists of three parts: the mansion at the front with the former factory section behind it and on the north-east side of this component, the adjoining former office. The street facade of the MANSION has a sober appearance without excessive ornamentation. The facade is constructed in dark red brick on a sandstone plinth and has on the ground floor three tall windows with fanlights and on the left the front door with fanlight. The first floor has four tall T-windows with fanlights. All have a one-and-a-half-brick segmental arch. The lower sill is formed, both on the ground floor and the first floor, by a continuous sandstone drip moulding. The building has a composite roof, covered with black corrugated Frisian tiles with a chimney on the ridge with a moulded chimney-plate; substantial gutter on volute consoles; frieze.
The mansion has a richly decorated INTERIOR. The ceilings, window sills and chimneypieces are all decorated in Louis XIV style.
The spacious entrance provides access to a hall, via an arch that rests on two Corinthian capitals, and a living room with a door furnished with a heavily moulded frame topped with a pediment. A window provides a view of the living room. The ceiling consists of heavy beams. Against the walls are wall-facings and pilasters with Ionic capitals.
The front living room was divided into two sections by a sliding door which has since been removed. The old front room has been renovated and contains no special features. The back room has a richly decorated ceiling with a symmetrical ornament with plant motif at the centre, decorative moulding along the edges and plant motifs in the corners, executed in yellow, red and green colour tones. Between two windows with window sills and shutters in the east facade is a black-marble fireplace with a richly decorated chimneypiece. In the rear wall is a shallow open cupboard with the same moulding as the door frames and a palmette with volutes as a crowning.
In the hall is a staircase to the first floor and the cellar. The wall recess has a double arch with a hanging capital and above it a medallion. The hall provides access to the kitchen. The kitchen has a substantial chimney with a substantial wooden chimneypiece supported on two chimney-posts and tiled all around with the same delft-blue tiles which are also fitted above the sink. From the kitchen one can enter the former factory section.
The first floor of the residence has a richly decorated room on the Midstraat side. Window sills with shutters at the four street windows. The chimneypiece is of Portoro with a richly decorated chimneypiece with mirror. Above the double access door a moulding consisting of an 'architrave with frieze'. The ceiling consists of a large circle, subdivided into segments with a rosette at the centre and at four sides a lion's head, a rich ceiling moulding and corner decoration. The whole is executed in red, yellow and green colour tones. The remaining rooms on the first floor are much more sober in execution. Only the room adjoining "De Witte Os" has an egg moulding along the ceiling, the remaining rooms contain no special features. The first-floor hall has a passage to the adjacent shop property and the staircase opening has an arch resting on volute corbels with acanthus leaves.
The former FACTORY section located behind the mansion has been substantially modified over the years. The first floor is completely partitioned and on the ground floor too many alterations have taken place. However, the structure and the shell of the building are still intact and as such are of historical-functional value for the entire complex.
The former OFFICE adjoining the factory section consists of two rooms, separated by a sliding door. The two rooms are in appearance related to the Louis XIV style of the mansion. With the construction of the (incidentally unprotected) conservatory at the rear, the pointed roof of the office has had to make way for a flat roof. The mortared chimney in the most southerly situated room also dates from that period. Above the conservatory opening are nine stained-glass windows; the side window on the east side also contains stained glass.
Valuation
The MANSION with associated FACTORY section and OFFICE of Douwe Egberts at Joure is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical significance:
- as a special expression of a socio-economic development that is closely connected with the 19th-century history of Joure;
- because of the high aesthetic qualities of the design of the component parts;
- because of the significance of the object as an essential component of a larger whole that is of architectural-historical and cultural-historical general importance;
- because of the reasonable integrity of the exterior and interior of some of the component parts.
