Omschrijving onderdeel 10: GRAFMONUMENT.
Op ongeveer 500 meter ten noordwesten van kasteel Soelen ligt een omgrachte motte, de Aldenhaag of Essenheuvel genoemd. De kunstmatige burchtheuvel, met een diameter van circa 50 meter, heeft een hoogte van enkele meters. Op het ruime platform staat een door een ijzeren spijlenhekje omringd l9de-eeuwse graftombe van blauwe hardsteen met op iedere hoek een acroterion; op de voorzijde is gegrift 'JOHAN GIJSBERT BARON VERSTOLK VAN SOELEN. Overleden den 3en November 1845'. Het grafmonument in Empirestijl is in 1843 gemaakt vermoedelijk naar ontwerp van J.D. Zocher. Rondom is een aanplant van kastanjes, treurwilgen en acacia's. De setting van het grafmonument vertoont grote overeenkomsten met de grafheuvel van de Franse filosoof Rousseau te Ermenonville (1712-1778). Direct ten westen van de omgrachting ligt een iets verhoogd, boogvormig stuk grond met een (droge) gracht, dat mogelijkerwijs de oorspronkelijke toegang tot de motte vormde.

Description component 10: GRAVE MONUMENT.
Approximately 500 metres northwest of castle Soelen lies a moated motte, called Aldenhaag or Essenheuvel. The artificial castle mound, with a diameter of approximately 50 metres, has a height of several metres. On the spacious platform stands a 19th-century grave tomb surrounded by an iron spear fence, made of blue hard stone with on each corner an acroterion; on the front is engraved 'JOHAN GIJSBERT BARON VERSTOLK VAN SOELEN. Died on 3rd November 1845'. The grave monument in Empire style was made in 1843 presumably designed by J.D. Zocher. Surrounding it is a planting of chestnuts, weeping willows and acacias. The setting of the grave monument shows great similarities with the grave mound of the French philosopher Rousseau at Ermenonville (1712-1778). Directly west of the moat lies a slightly raised, arched piece of ground with a (dry) ditch, which possibly formed the original access to the motte.
