Omschrijving
Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG.
- wegens de ouderdom;
- wegens de gaaf bewaarde van oorspong middeleeuwse verdedigbare kern met omgrachte voorburcht en huis;
- wegens de in hoofdopzet gaaf bewaarde formele structuur waarbinnen een aanleg in landschapsstijl is gerealiseerd;

Description
Description component 2: HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.
Within the formal 17th-century structure of the layout, determined by a system of moats and lanes, a landscape-style layout has been realised in various phases from the end of the 18th century onwards. A drawing from 1805 shows a formal layout of which the lane system, the boundaries and the spatial subdivision (parcelling) of the estate are still present today, as well as the first beginnings of the landscape-style layout with a meandering connecting lane still preserved on the east side between Soelen and Aldenhaag. At this time there stood a hermitage on the so-called Essenheuvel near Aldenhaag, which was replaced in 1845 by a monument (see component number 10). Around the Essenheuvel is a planting of chestnuts, weeping willows and acacias. The core of the layout is formed by the moated forecourt and the moated house situated on an islet with steep slope, from which two sight axes run. In a westward direction a sight lane in 17th-century layout (Beemdse laan) with double row planting, which has been recently restored, and in a southward direction a view from the landscape period over an irregularly shaped meadow with tree groups and coulisse effect towards the bridge and church tower of Zoelen. In the meadow lies a small body of water. The originally straight entrance drive which runs west of this meadow dates from the geometric layout and received its slightly curved course in the 19th century. Some oaks in the meadow, which are included as a tree group in the landscape layout, refer to the old course of the lane. Northwest of the house lies the site of the original star wood, which was felled in 1828. On either side of the wood stands a group of well-developed trees (oak and beech). From the former star wood runs the round walk around a polygonal meadow the Beemd, into which a 'pheasant wood' with various tree planting (1927) has been laid out. The round walk is marked by a regular planting of trees. Along Aldenhaag runs a curved oak lane. On the west side of the Beemd runs a straight lane with parallel to it next to (east) a parallel lane, now no longer in use as a lane. Together they form a transverse axis of the sight lane, with alternating coppice woods with borders and orchards to the west thereof. On the forecourt stand on either side of the access bridge to the house an old chestnut tree and west of it a row of old lime trees.
Valuation
The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Soelen is of general cultural-historical and garden-historical importance:
- due to its age;
- due to the well-preserved medieval fortifiable core of origin with moated forecourt and house;
- due to the formal structure well-preserved in its main design within which a landscape-style layout has been realised;
- due to the visual-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate.
