Inleiding
Dubbel woonhuis, vrijstaand, opvallend gesitueerd aan het Oranjeplein dat in zekere mate haar vooroorlogse uitstraling heeft bewaard. Gebouwd in 1921 in traditionalistische stijl naar ontwerp van architect C.J. Duykers. Het rechterpand was het woonhuis van architect, huisnummer 1. Bij dit pand de halfvrijstaande voormalige waskeuken tot garage verbouwd in ca. 1960, exterieur gelijk gebleven. Oorspronkelijke hekwerk aan straatzijde inmiddels geheel verdwenen; bij pand huisnummer no. 2 omstreeks 1980 vervangen. Bij pand huisnummer 2 een bijbouw van garage met zadeldak. Deze is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Twee halfvrijstaande woonhuizen in twee bouwlagen onder gewelfde schilddaken met rode Tuiles du Nord. Pand huisnummer 2 met betonpannen bedekt. Goten op aanzienlijke consoles, dakkapellen, totaal drie nokschoorstenen. Gevels van bakstenen metselwerk in kruisverband. Plint in hardsteen in zwart/grijze tint, opstand met speklagen, decoratieve lisenen en langs gevelranden bloktand decoratie. Rechthoekige houten kruiskozijnen met achtruits bovenlichten, rechthoekige houten deuren. Hardstenen dorpels en strek. Symmetrische compositie met entreepartijen in trappenhuis uitbouwen aan zijgevels, voorzien van portiekluifels op houten kolommen. Uitbouw in twee en halve bouwlaag met schilddak, drie traveeën. Venster met glas-in-lood in geel en blauw, in tweede laag met bovenlicht en in bovenste laag lage vensters. Symmetrische voorgevel per deel twee traveeën met aan weerszijden lisenen en op dak een dakkapel. Linkerdeel van gevel in eerste bouwlaag met kunststof luifels, kozijn dakkapel vervangen. Rechterzijgevel uitbouw een entree met authentieke voordeur onder houten luifel rustend op een hoekkolom in hout, een schilddak. Een muur met poortje naar garage, een rechthoekig gebouwtje met tentdak en Tuiles du Nord. Verder een baksteen muur waarin boogvormig poortje, boog gedekt met kunststeen. Beide panden aan achtergevel over gehele breedte een uitbouw in een bouwlaag met lessenaarsdak deels Tuiles du Nord, boven de serre in glas. In linkerzijgevel uitbouw in twee en een halve bouwlaag met schilddak, glas-in-lood vensters. Entree met authentieke voordeur onder houten luifel rustend op houten kolom. Bakstenen erfscheiding met rollagen en hardstenen afdekking, deels vernieuwd, authentieke bakstenen kolommen met hardstenen afdekking, houten hekwerk van omstreeks 1980.
Van het INTERIEUR van beide panden is onder meer het volgende van belang. Interieur pand huisnummer 1: indeling is geheel intact. Voorhal met marmer tegels in wit/grijs, met rondom een zwarte marmer band. In centrale hal een haardomlijsting in zwarte marmer. Een dubbele tussendeur met glas panelen, vier treden naar centrale hal met vloer in marmer en authentieke houten trappenhuis doorlopend tot zolderverdieping, houten lambrisering, trap met vier overloopjes; trapkast; in overige kamers enkele marmeren haardomlijstingen in zwart; pand geheel onderkelderd met o.a. wijnkelder. Glas-in-lood in trappenhuiswand naar ontwerp van C. Duykers, vervaardigd door atelier van der Essen. In middenraam een glas-in-lood paneel vervaardigd door J. Luyten. Interieur pand huisnummer 2: indeling ingrijpend aangepast, behalve de hal. Voorhal met marmer tegels in wit/zwart; glas-in- lood vensters; tussendeur naar centrale hal met glas panelen; vier treden naar hal met vloer in marmer; haardomlijsting in hal met zwarte marmer; trap met lambrisering authentiek, idem overlopen.
Waardering:
Het dubbele woonhuis is een goed voorbeeld van representatieve woonhuisarchitectuur. Het bouwvolume kenmerkt zich door een bijzondere detaillering en esthetiek, die gaaf bewaard zijn gebleven. Ook de inrichting van het dubbele woonhuis is redelijk gaaf bewaard gebleven, waaronder de trappenhuizen. Het dubbele woonhuis is opmerkelijk gesitueerd aan het Oranjeplein. Two semi-detached dwellings in two storeys under vaulted hipped roofs with red Tuiles du Nord. Property house number 2 covered with concrete tiles. Gutters on substantial consoles, roof dormers, total three ridge chimneys. Facades of brick masonry in English bond. Plinth in ashlar in black/grey tone, upright with courses, decorative pilasters and along facade edges tooth decoration. Rectangular wooden cross windows with back panes and fanlights, rectangular wooden doors. Ashlar sills and stretch. Symmetrical composition with entrance sections in staircase extensions on side facades, provided with porch hoods on wooden columns. Extension in two and a half storeys with hipped roof, three bays. Window with leaded glass in yellow and blue, in second storey with fanlight and in top storey low windows. Symmetrical front facade per section two bays with pilasters on either side and on roof a roof dormer. Left section of facade in first storey with plastic hoods, dormer window frame replaced. Right side facade extension an entrance with authentic front door under wooden hood resting on a corner column in wood, a hipped roof. A wall with gate to garage, a rectangular small building with tent roof and Tuiles du Nord. Further a brick wall in which arched gate, arch covered with artificial stone. Both properties at rear facade over entire width an extension in one storey with lean-to roof partly Tuiles du Nord, above the greenhouse in glass. In left side facade extension in two and a half storeys with hipped roof, leaded glass windows. Entrance with authentic front door under wooden hood resting on wooden column. Brick boundary wall with roll courses and ashlar coping, partly renewed, authentic brick columns with ashlar coping, wooden railings from approximately 1980.

Entrance hall with marble tiles in white/black; leaded glass windows; connecting door to central hall with glass panels; four steps to hall with marble floor; mantelpiece surround in hall with black marble; staircase with wainscoting authentic, likewise landings.
