Inleiding
BOTANISCHE TUIN ontworpen in 1939 naar een ontwerp van tuinarchitect John Bergmans uit Oisterwijk. De tuin is ontworpen in Engelse landschapsstijl. Het ontwerp werd gemaakt in opdracht van de Staatsmijnen. De parochie Terwinselen stelde de grond voor de tuin ter beschikking.
De Botanische Tuin wordt door de navolgende straten omgrenst: aan de noordzijde door de Callistusstraat; aan de oostzijde door de Singelweg, en aan de zuidzijde door de Sint Hubertuslaan. Aan de oostzijde zijn de R.K. kerk O.L.V. Onbevlekt Ontvangen met het kerkhof en de pastorie gesitueerd.
De oppervlakte van de tuin is 1,5 ha.
Het voormalige theehuis met aanbouwen uit 1952 en 1992 is uitgesloten van bescherming.
Omschrijving
Botanische tuin met doorzichten; met een centrale vijverpartij met aan weerszijden doorzichten; ronde borders; een grote variëteit aan plantenassortimenten; grillig padenprofiel; glooiingen in het terrein zijn nog in tact; het centrale deel van de tuin is het diepst gelegen met aan weerszijden hoger oplopende delen. Een grote verscheidenhied aan bomen, heesters en planten uit de gematigde zônes van de hele wereld, samen met planten uit de inheemse en Limburgse flora samengebracht rondom de gazons, paden en vijver. Aan de zuidzijde bevindt zich de oorspronkelijke toegangspoort met smeedijzeren hekwerk. De bakstenen kolommen zijn van omstreeks 1992.
In 1950 werd door landschapsarchitect Tersteeg in het noordelijke deel van de tuin een bomenrij met heesters aangeplant: deze zijn op grond van de leeftijd vooralsnog uitgesloten van bescherming.
Waardering
De Botanische tuin van Terwinselen bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en sociaal-economische ontwikkeling. De Botanische tuin is tevens cultuurhistorisch van belang als vitaliserend complement op het grauwe mijnwerkersbestaan en als historisch stedenbouwkundig element met recreatieve waarden alsmede sierwaarde. Architectuurhistorische waarden ontleent de tuin aan het bijzondere belang voor de geschiedenis van de tuinarchitectuur; als voorbeeld van het oeuvre van tuinarchitect John Bergmans; wegens de esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp; wegens de grote variëteit aan plantenassortimenten. Ensemblewaarden bezit de Botanische tuin als essentieel onderdeel van een groter complex dat de parochiekerk met pastorie en een dokterswoning omvat en zeer centraal in de wijk Terwinselen is gelegen. Dit complex is van bijzondere betekenis voor het aanzien van Kerkrade. De Botanische tuin is tenslotte van algemeen belang wegens de hoogwaardige architectonische kwaliteit van de tuinaanleg en in relatie tot de structurele en visuele gaafheid van de stedelijke omgeving. Daarnaast is sprake van een object met architectuurhistorische, typologische en functionele zeldzaamheid.

Botanical garden with vistas; with a central water feature with vistas on either side; round borders; a large variety of plant assortments; irregular path profile; the undulations in the terrain are still intact; the central part of the garden is the deepest with higher rising parts on either side. A great diversity of trees, shrubs and plants from the temperate zones of the whole world, brought together with plants from the native and Limburgian flora around the lawns, paths and water feature. On the south side is the original entrance gate with wrought ironwork. The brick columns are from approximately 1992.
In 1950 landscape architect Tersteeg planted a row of trees with shrubs in the northern part of the garden: these are excluded from protection on the basis of their age.

The Botanical Garden is finally of general importance because of the high-quality architectural quality of the garden layout and in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment. Moreover, this is an object with architectural-historical, typological and functional rarity.
