Inleiding
De ROOMS-KATHOLIEKE BEGRAAFPLAATS behorende bij de St. Werenfriduskerk (1877-78; architect A. Tepe) te Workum is in 1883 aangelegd. De begraafplaats ligt achter de kerk, is naar het oosten gericht en wordt aan de noord-, west- en zuidzijde door een sloot omringd. Aan de oostzijde bevindt zich de toegang tot de begraafplaats; hiervandaan loopt een lang, recht pad naar de kerk. Op de begraafplaats staan verschillende grafmonumenten die samen de begraafplaats haar bijzondere karakter verlenen. Een tweetal, de CALVARIEBERG vermoedelijk uit 1883 met PRIESTERGRAVEN en het GIETIJZEREN GRAFMONUMENT voor de benefactoren Bernardus Fluitman en Sytske Ydema (vermoedelijk rond 1890 vervaardigd), wordt op grond van bijzondere kwaliteiten afzonderlijk omschreven. De betreffende grafmonumenten bevinden zich in de twee vakken aan de noordzijde van de aanleg.
Omschrijving
BEGRAAFPLAATS. De rechthoekige begraafplaats heeft een eenvoudige aanleg met een onderverdeling in zes vakken. Tussen de twee meest westelijke vakken bevindt zich een centraal gedeelte met cirkelvormig pad eromheen, waar de Calvarieberg met priestergraven is aangelegd. De overige rechte paden zijn oost-west en noord-zuid aangelegd.
CALVARIEBERG met PRIESTERGRAVEN. De Calvarieberg staat in het centrum van een cirkelvormige ruimte, tussen de twee noordelijke vakken van de begraafplaats en bestaat uit een gekruisigde Christus, geflankeerd door Maria (links) en Johannes de Evangelist (rechts). Het Mariabeeld is vervaardigd door A. van Aerschot te Herenthals (België); op het beeld van de gekruisigde Christus en van Johannes is geen merk te lezen. De beelden zijn van gietijzer; het kruis is van hout.
De natuurstenen priestergraven liggen in waaiervorm aan de voet van de Calvarieberg. Het meest bijzondere graf qua uitvoering is dat van pastoor F.J. Oorsprong (1917). Het NEOGOTISCH GRAFMONUMENT zonder opschrift, in het noord-westelijke vak van de begraafplaats is gemaakt voor twee benefactoren, het echtpaar Bernardus Fluitman en Sytske Ydema te Workum. Zij schonken onder meer geld voor de bouw van het Adema-orgel en een huis bovendien schonken zij een stuk land als bijdrage voor de bouw van een nieuwe kerk. De beelden op het graf stellen de heilige Cecilia en de heilige Bernardus voor. Ze zijn gegoten door A. van Aerschot te Herenthals (België).
Het monument is naar het oosten gericht en is door zijn hoogte en bijzondere silhouet zeer opvallend en vanaf de ingang al zichtbaar. Het bestaat uit een vierkante natuurstenen sokkel met gietijzeren balustrade en een hoog, rechthoekig voetstuk waarop de gietijzeren beelden zijn geplaatst. Deze staan onder een sierlijk (neo-gotisch) vormgegeven baldakijn. Het voetstuk is van natuursteen en gietijzer. Het gietijzeren baldakijn bestaat uit een vensterachtige omlijsting met visblazen aan de vóór- en achterzijde en wordt bekroond door een gietijzeren crucifix.
Waardering
De begraafplaats met Calvarieberg en priestergraven en een neogotisch grafmonument, behorend bij het complex van de rooms-katholieke St. Werenfriduskerk, is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch belang:
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een geestelijke ontwikkeling;
- als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling;
- als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel dat cultuurhistorisch van nationaal belang is;

CEMETERY. The rectangular cemetery has a simple layout with a subdivision into six sections. The Calvary Hill stands in the centre of a circular space, between the two northern sections of the cemetery and consists of a crucified Christ, flanked by Mary (left) and John the Evangelist (right). The statue of Mary was made by A. van Aerschot in Herenthals (Belgium); no mark is visible on the statue of the crucified Christ and of John. The statues are of cast iron; the cross is of wood.
The natural stone priests' graves lie in fan formation at the foot of the Calvary Hill. The most distinctive grave in terms of execution is that of Pastor F.J. Oorsprong (1917). The NEO-GOTHIC GRAVE MONUMENT without inscription, in the north-western section of the cemetery was made for two benefactors, the couple Bernardus Fluitman and Sytske Ydema of Workum.
