Inleiding

Waardering

Introduction

The PARSONAGE, belonging to the Roman Catholic St. Werenfriduskerk (separate monument number 39479), was built in 1876-1877 to designs by architect A. Tepe (1840-1920) in a blend of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Renaissance. Church and parsonage were designed in relation to each other and form a unified whole.

The parsonage is situated on the north side of the town, at the corner where the Noard -traditionally the main axis within Workum's road structure- runs into the Prysterhoek, just within the boundary of the protected townscape. Parsonage and church are oriented towards the east-southeast, approximately in the optical extension of the Dwarsnoard, which was filled in in 1910 and runs perpendicular to the Noard. To the right of the parsonage is a small square providing access to the side entrance of the church and the parsonage. The main entrance of the parsonage is thus not in the front facade (east facade) but in the north facade. The east facade, on the street side, is bounded by a cast-iron RAILING. The parsonage nowadays has a museum function.

Description

The parsonage is built of brown brick and has a rectangular ground plan, which is connected at the rear to the ground plan of the ecclesiastical building. It is covered by a gabled roof with slates and two chimneys. The front facade consists of a stepped gable which is divided into three sections by three flat, brick-built pilasters, between which are symmetrically placed two times two six-pane windows. These are situated within brick-built spare fields with Gothic closure and brick-built decorative motifs.

Between the two storeys runs a toothed string course. Ornamental wall anchors mark the floor levels. On either side of the windows on the first floor is a blind three-light opening. At the top there are two more small light-curved windows. The north facade is symmetrically divided by the entrance section: on either side of this are three six-pane windows with large pointed-arch brick-built arch fields. Wall anchors are placed between the windows. The entrance consists of a projecting section under a gabled roof; within this is the front door with, beside it, a triangular small tower under a pointed roof. On either side of this are two small roof dormers with tent roof and decorative cresting in the roof slope. In the projecting section (with stepped gable) is the wooden front door with two-light fanlight and above it a six-pane window. In the small tower are three small square windows and three vertical windows. All windows are provided with a brick-built pointed-arch arch field. The brick-built decorative element in the first storey is a large flower. The rear facade has been partly altered: beside the wooden back door is a large new window and at the top a T-window. The top is closed off by crenellations. In the south facade are two large new square windows between which are placed two large windows with leaded glass and Gothic pointed arch. In the south roof slope are two small chapels, the same as those in the north roof slope.

The INTERIOR, as far as the layout on the ground floor is concerned, is to a large extent original; the first floor has been altered. On the ground floor the rooms on the street side are arranged as a museum: the ceilings are partly lowered; in the L-shaped long corridors the black marble floor tiles and the old wooden wall panelling are still present. The rooms with museum function still have the original interior shutters and a black marble fireplace mantel. Furthermore the original wooden panelled doors are still present.

Valuation

The parsonage of 1876-1877, with railing, belonging to the complex of the Roman Catholic St. Werenfriduskerk by architect A. Tepe, is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:

- as a particular expression of a spiritual development;

- by virtue of the aesthetic quality of the design;

- by virtue of the use of materials and the ornamentation;

- as an essential component of a larger whole that is of national cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance;

- by virtue of the architectural integrity of the exterior and (to a reasonable extent) of the interior;

- in relation to the structural and visual integrity of the urban environment.
