Inleiding

- de ouderdom;

- de betekenis voor de geschiedenis van de vestingbouw;

- de zeldzaamheid en de, naar verhouding, gave staat;

- de historische ervarings- en belevingswaarden die in de restanten besloten liggen;

Introduction

Remains of two bastions, together forming a complex, both situated in and against the Maasdijk at Ravenstein: Kasteel Bolwerk (also known as "Kasteelsche Bok"), at the level of the Van Coothweg (near house number 7; complex number 1) and Oranje Bolwerk (also known as "Den Bok"), at the level of the Walstraat (near house numbers 37 and 38; complex number 2). The bastions date from 1521-1522 and were established on the initiative of Philips van Kleef (1456-1528). Remains of the bastions were found in 1997 during excavation works at the Maasdijk; they form part of the fortifications of Ravenstein. After the discovery, scientific investigation and consolidation work, the remains were sealed with brick and covered with copper.

Description of complex component 1:

The remains of Kasteel Bolwerk (also known as Kasteelsche Bok), at the level of the Van Coothweg (near house number 7) and situated on the northwest side of the fortified town of Ravenstein comprise a circular ground plan with rectangular extension. Below ground level there are, among others, a vaulted space with gun port. The remains consist largely of brick for the exterior where at the level of the waterline stone has been used as protection against erosion from the Maas water; internally marl blocks are incorporated, naturally spark-free - as a material safeguard against explosion risk. The walls of this bastion remain are approximately four metres thick.

Description of complex component 2:

The remains of Oranje Bolwerk (also known as "Den Bok"), at the level of the Walstraat (near house numbers 37 and 38 on the Maasdijk) and situated on the northeast side of the fortified town of Ravenstein comprise a circular ground plan. Below ground level there are various rooms and passages. The remains consist largely of brick for the exterior where at the level of the waterline stone has been used as protection against erosion from the Maas water; internally marl blocks are incorporated, naturally spark-free - as a material safeguard against explosion risk. The walls of this bastion remain are approximately four metres thick.

Valuation

The remains of the two bastions Kasteelsche Bok and Oranje Bolwerk from 1521-1522, situated in and against the Maasdijk at Ravenstein represent general significance on the basis of:

- the age;

- the significance for the history of fortification construction;

- the rarity and the relatively intact state;

- the historical experiential and perceptual values enclosed in the remains;

- the landscape-historical significance, in particular in relation to the open floodplain of the Maas as well as the significance for the protected townscape of Ravenstein.
