Inleiding
Op de vestingwerken in de noordwestelijke hoek van Ravenstein is, op een poterne, omstreeks 1890 een tienhoekige TUINKOEPEL opgetrokken, vanwaar men uitzicht heeft over de uiterwaarden van de Maas en de spoorbrug.
Omschrijving
De eenlaags houten tuinkoepel of theehuis is opgetrokken op een bepleisterde bakstenen sokkel. In de houten wanden zijn negenruits vensters opgenomen. Het ronde tentdak is met riet gedekt. Het interieur heeft een planken vloer en een gestucadoord plafond. Tegen de wanden is een tienhoekige houten bank aangebracht.
Drie van de tien wandvlakken zijn niet uitgerust met vensters; in de meest westelijke bevindt zich een toegangsdeur en aan de noordelijke en zuidelijke zijde zijn twee vlakken voorzien van ingebouwde legkasten.
Waardering
Het object is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang als voorbeeld van de transformatie van vestingwerken in groene recreatiegebieden en tuinen en heeft typologisch belang voor de ontwikkeling van de tuinkoepel. On the fortifications in the north-western corner of Ravenstein, on a postern, a decagonal GARDEN PAVILION was erected around 1890, from which there is a view over the floodplains of the Maas and the railway bridge.
Description
The single-storey wooden garden pavilion or tea house is erected on a plastered brick base. In the wooden walls are nine-paned windows. The round tent roof is covered with thatch. The interior has a board floor and a plastered ceiling. Against the walls is a decagonal wooden bench.
Three of the ten wall panels are not fitted with windows; in the most western one there is an entrance door and on the northern and southern sides two panels are provided with built-in shelves.
Valuation
The object is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of the transformation of fortifications into green recreational areas and gardens and has typological importance for the development of the garden pavilion. It has architectural-historical importance as an element of garden architecture and because of its simple but balanced detailing. It has ensemble values because of its location on older fortifications, linked to the development of the town. Such a well-preserved garden pavilion is rare.
