Inleiding

In 1923-'24 naar ontwerp van Johan Brouwer en J.C. Brand jr. gebouwd BLOK VAN VIER HERENHUIZEN.

Introduction

BLOCK OF FOUR TERRACED HOUSES built in 1923-24 according to a design by Johan Brouwer and J.C. Brand jr. The block, which is located on the north side of the Crayenesterlaan, is constructed in hollow concrete blocks (a stack-building system). The block belongs to a design of four blocks of four terraced houses. Ultimately, only two blocks from this design were built; this block and a virtually identical block that, also on the north side of the Crayenesterlaan, is situated somewhat further west.

The block of terraced houses shows in its architectural style influences from the Nieuwe Bouwen (material use and main form) and Art Deco (design details).

Description

The block of four terraced houses is two storeys high under a flat roof and is built on a rectangular floor plan with recessed and projecting volumes. The block is symmetrical in design, with the dwellings mirrored in pairs both in terms of exterior and floor plan.

The external walls and internal walls of the block of terraced houses are constructed in hollow concrete blocks. The foundation is of reinforced concrete. The floor of the ground storey consists of a continuous concrete slab that extends under all four houses. The remaining intermediate floors are, like the ceilings, of wood.

The exterior of the block of houses is white plastered. The front facade of the block has several risalits that step forward progressively. The two outermost and two middle risalits are extended somewhat above the overhanging wooden eaves. Of the entries originally all executed with a wooden front door with canopy, three still remain in their original location, namely in the two middle risalits and in the left side risalit. At number 63 the entrance has been relocated to the side facade. The two outermost risalits are built around the corner and continue through the side facades. Between the corner dwellings and the middle dwellings are also risalits in the front facade. The remaining facades are flat.

In the middle of the block of terraced houses, between the front doors of the two middle houses, is a gate that leads to the rear gardens.

The windows in the front facade include fixed windows and casement windows in various sizes, originally all with glazing bars. On the ground storey the windows are extended into a bay window.

In the side facades there are various windows of different sizes and shapes.

The rear facade has on the ground storey extended conservatories that end at the level of the upper storey in a balcony. Besides the casement doors in the conservatories and at the balconies, the rear facade contains mainly fixed windows, originally all with glazing bars.

The interior of the dwellings is traditional in layout; originally consisting of a hall, corridor, kitchen and parlour on the ground storey and four rooms on the upper storey.

Valuation

A largely well-preserved block of terraced houses from 1923-24 of general importance because of its building-historical value as being an early realised example of concrete construction in private residential houses, as well as because of its architectural-historical value with influences from architecture including the Nieuwe Bouwen (material use and main form).
