Inleiding
Voormalige TURBINEHAL, gebouwd in 1902 als onderdeel van de gemeentelijke elektriciteits- en gasfabriek (thans Energie Bedrijf Haarlem). De hal is na verwijdering van de door stoomtractie gevoede turbines buiten gebruik geraakt. De stoommachine stond in een aanbouw aan de lange noordzijde.
Omschrijving
Op rechthoekig grondplan gebouwde turbinehal onder plat dak waarvan de overstekende gootlijsten rusten op houten consoles. Het rechthoekige en gedeeltelijk onderkelderde hoofdvolume wordt aan beide lange zijden door negen lisenen in acht traveeën verdeeld met spaarvelden. Aan de zuidwestzijde bevindt zich een lagere rechthoekige aanbouw uit de bouwtijd. Het muurwerk is opgetrokken in rode baksteen, waarin ter decoratie rood geglazuurde baksteen is verwerkt. Rood geglazuurde baksteen is ter decoratie ook elders in het metselwerk opgenomen. De lateien van de vensterreeksen en delen van de lisenen zijn uitgevoerd in hardsteen. De spaarvelden bevatten bovenaan elk aan beide lange zijden een horizontale uitgemetselde banddecoratie waarin rood geglazuurde baksteen is verwerkt. Daaronder bevindt zich een hoog in het muurwerk geplaatste vensterreeks die per travee vier staande vensters bevat. In de zuidelijke zijgevel bevindt zich lager in de traveeën ook nog een aantal grote vensters. De vensters hebben alle ten dele beweegbare ijzeren ramen met een meerruits roedenverdeling. Het interieur van de turbinehal bestaat uit een pijlerloze ruimte die over de breedte wordt overspannen door ijzeren spanten waarboven zich kruislings geplaatste H-profielen bevinden. De spanten rusten op het muurwerk dat ook aan de binnenzijde is voorzien van lisenen. Het muurwerk aan de binnenzijde is gemetseld in groen, geel en wit geglazuurde baksteen. Onder de bovenste vensterreeksen loopt een smalle, in hardsteen uitgevoerde omgang met daarop rails ten behoeve van de nog ten dele aanwezige hijsinstallatie (loopkat voor turbineonderhoud). De hal heeft een nog ten dele door ijzeren hekwerk omgeven plateau aan de oostzijde. Dit voormalige bedieningsplateau beslaat ongeveer een vijfde van de hallengte. De overige ruimte heeft een in gewapend beton uitgevoerde onderkeldering met daarin nog diverse kranen ten behoeve van de voormalige koelinstallatie.
Waardering
Voormalige turbinehal uit 1902 van algemeen belang uit cultuurhistorisch, industrieel-archeologisch en bouwhistorisch oogpunt als vroeg en gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een op de openbare elektriciteitsvoorziening gericht bouwtype.

Description
Turbine hall built on a rectangular ground plan under a flat roof whose overhanging gutter lines rest on wooden consoles. The rectangular and partially cellar-level main volume is divided on both long sides by nine pilasters into eight bays with spandrels. On the southwest side there is a lower rectangular extension from the time of construction. The masonry is constructed in red brick, with red glazed brick incorporated for decoration. Red glazed brick is also incorporated decoratively elsewhere in the masonry. The lintels of the window series and parts of the pilasters are executed in ashlar stone. The spandrels each contain at the top on both long sides a horizontal built-up band decoration incorporating red glazed brick. Below this is a high-placed window series in the masonry that contains four tall windows per bay. In the southern side gable there are also a number of large windows lower in the bays. All windows have partly movable iron frames with multi-pane glazing bars. The interior of the turbine hall consists of a column-free space spanned across the width by iron trusses above which diagonally placed H-sections are positioned. The trusses rest on the masonry which is also provided with pilasters on the inner side. The masonry on the inner side is laid in green, yellow and white glazed brick. Below the upper window series runs a narrow passage executed in ashlar stone with rails for the partially remaining hoisting installation (travelling crane for turbine maintenance). The hall has a plateau on the east side still partially surrounded by iron railings. This former operating platform covers approximately one-fifth of the hall length. The remaining space has a reinforced concrete cellar-level floor with various cranes inside for the former cooling installation.

Former turbine hall from 1902 of general significance from a cultural-historical, industrial-archaeological and building-historical perspective as an early and well-preserved example of a building type designed for public electricity supply.
