Inleiding

Introduction

A RESIDENTIAL BLOCK located on the west side of Wilhelminastraat, between Alexanderstraat (north) and Wilsonsplein (south).

The residential block, built in a mixture of Eclecticism and Neo-Renaissance style, comprises six dwellings and was constructed in 1882 according to designs by S. Roog. The residential block forms part of the formal urban planning scheme of Wilhelminastraat and its immediate surroundings. Wilhelminastraat was laid out in 1881 as the main axis of a western urban expansion that took place on the site of the filled-in former city rampart. This urban expansion is characterized by a regular and strict street pattern, in which the individually designed residential blocks and dwelling houses form an architectural unity. Notably along Wilhelminastraat and Mauritsstraat, the street frontages formed by the various residential blocks and dwelling houses are striking by virtue of their urban planning unity and architecture. The residential buildings along Wilhelminastraat are interspersed with a church and two schools, which likewise fit within the urban planning scheme of the street.

Description

A residential block consisting of six townhouses on a rectangular ground plan. The residential block, which is built in brick on a natural stone plinth, consists of three different housing types arranged in the schema A-B-C-C-B-A.

The housing type C (the central block) consists of two residential units and is built up from a basement, bel-étage, first floor and attic storey. This central block, which is covered by a hipped roof clad with black roof tiles and grey Dutch tiles, is in total eight window bays wide, whereby the outermost two window bays on either side project forward. These projecting facade sections are terminated above the cornice by a roof dormer with angle braces and pediment. The front facade is decorated with string courses between the different storeys and bands of projecting stone. Along the top of the front facade is a frieze fitted with consoles bearing lion heads that support the wooden moulded cornice. The two entrances are located in the recessed four-window-bay-wide central section and consist of a wooden panelled door set in a portico with cast-iron ornamental grille that is accessible by means of a natural stone staircase comprising six steps. The portiches are decorated with richly ornamented consoles bearing heads of young men and bands of projecting stone. The windows in the front facade of the central block C are all wooden sash windows, with on the first floor a T-headed window. The basement has double-opening wooden windows with ironwork grilles. The windows on the bel-étage are terminated at the top by a course with plastered ashlar stones and a keystone with console. The windows in the projecting facade sections are terminated at the bottom by a plastered plate decorated with strapwork. The windows on the first floor have a male head as keystone in the recessed central section. The windows on the first floor of the projecting facade sections possess plastered decorative plates both at the top and bottom which are decorated with strapwork.

Housing type B is located on either side of the central block and is built up from a ground floor, first floor and attic storey. This housing type, which is covered by a hipped roof originally clad with black roof tiles, is lower in building height than the adjacent dwellings. This housing type is four window bays wide, whereby the middle two window bays project forward to some degree. This central projection is originally terminated above the cornice by a double roof dormer with pediment. The front facade is decorated with a string course between the ground floor and first floor and plastered bands above and below the windows. Beneath the wooden moulded cornice is a narrow frieze with consoles. The entrance, which is located in respectively the third and second window bay of the building, originally consists of a recessed wooden panelled door with cast-iron ornamental grilles and is accessible by means of a two-step stoop. The portico in which this door is located is decorated with bands of projecting stone. The windows in the front facade of housing type B are all sash windows, with on the first floor a T-headed window. The windows on the ground floor have a console as keystone. The windows on the first floor possess keystones in the form of male heads. The windows on the first floor of the central projection are terminated at the top and bottom by plastered plates decorated with strapwork.

Housing type A is located at the left and right corner of the residential block and is built up from a basement, bel-étage, first floor and attic storey. These corner properties are covered by a hipped roof clad with black roof tiles. The front facades of housing type A are four window bays wide. At the corner with the side facade is a narrow chamfered window bay. The side facade is three window bays wide. The two middle window bays of the front facade, the chamfered corner window bay, the middle window bay of the side facade and the wall sections at the corners all project forward. The projecting central section of the front facade is terminated above the cornice by a single roof dormer with pediment and originally on either side with angle braces. The projecting corner window bay is terminated above the cornice by a fantasy pediment with a peak. In the side facade the central projection is terminated above the cornice with a pediment. The front and side facades of the corner dwellings are decorated throughout with string courses between the storeys and various bands of projecting stone. Along the top of the facade is a wide frieze with consoles bearing lion heads that support the wooden moulded cornice. The entrance is located in the projecting central section of the front facade and consists of a wooden door set in a portico with cast-iron ornamental grille that is accessible by means of a natural stone staircase comprising six steps. The windows in the front facades of housing type A are all wooden sash windows, with on the first floor a T-headed window. The basement has double-opening wooden windows with ironwork grilles. In the chamfered corner window bay is located on the bel-étage and first floor a narrow wooden sash window. The right side facade of housing type A is blank. The windows on the bel-étage are terminated at the top by plastered ashlar stones and a keystone with console. Two windows on the first floor have a keystone in the form of a male head. The windows on the first floor of the projecting central section of the front facade are terminated at the top and bottom by plastered plates decorated with strapwork. The window on the bel-étage in this central projection also possesses at the bottom a decorative plate with strapwork.

The rear facade of the residential block is simpler in execution and decoration than the front and side facades. The different building heights of the individual dwellings are also visible here. The rear facade originally has wooden six-pane sash windows and wooden four-pane opening windows on the storeys and wooden opening garden and kitchen doors at the level of the bel-étage and ground floor. The garden doors on the bel-étage are originally accessible by means of a wooden staircase with balcony.

Valuation

A largely well-preserved residential block with six townhouses from 1882 in a combination of Eclecticism and Neo-Renaissance style, of general importance on account of its architectural history value and urban planning and ensemble value as a characteristic component of the nineteenth-century formal urban expansion around Wilhelminastraat; the residential block is a character-defining element in the western facade of Wilhelminastraat, which appears as an architectural unity in terms of architecture. The residential block is furthermore of cultural-historical importance as an element in the history of dwelling for the wealthy and is important within the oeuvre of architect S. Roog.
