Inleiding
Het woningtype A is vier vensterassen breed.

Description
Introduction
A RESIDENTIAL BLOCK situated on the east side of Wilhelminastraat. The residential block, which forms part of the facade line between Keizerstraat (north) and Alexanderstraat (south), is bordered on the north side by the former boys' school Wilhelminastraat 43a and on the south side by Alexanderstraat.
The residential block, constructed in a mixture of Eclecticism and neo-renaissance style, comprises eight dwellings and was built in 1884 according to a design by A. van der Steur jr. The residential block forms part of the formal urban planning scheme of Wilhelminastraat and its immediate surroundings. Wilhelminastraat was laid out in 1881 as the main axis of a western urban expansion that took place on the site of the filled-in former city rampart. This urban expansion is characterized by a regular and strict street pattern, whereby the individually designed residential blocks and dwellings form an architectural unity. In particular along Wilhelminastraat and Mauritsstraat, the street facades constructed from various residential blocks and dwellings are striking in their urban planning unity and architecture. The residential buildings along Wilhelminastraat are interspersed with a church and two schools, which likewise fit into the urban planning concept of the street.
Description
A residential block consisting of eight townhouses on a rectangular floor plan. The residential block is constructed in brick on a natural stone plinth and consists of three different dwelling types arranged in the pattern A-B-B-C-C-B-B-A.
Dwelling type A is located at the corners of the residential block. The left dwelling, Wilhelminastraat 45, connects to the facade line of Wilhelminastraat. The right dwelling, Wilhelminastraat 59, is located at the corner with Alexanderstraat. Dwelling type A is built up from a basement, piano nobile, first floor and attic storey and is covered by a hipped roof clad in grey Dutch tiles or mastic. Dwelling type A is four window bays wide. At the property Wilhelminastraat 45, the two middle window bays together form a projecting central section, in which the entrance is located. At the corner property Wilhelminastraat 59, the right window bay, at the corner with Alexanderstraat, is chamfered. At this property, all four window bays are projecting and the entrance is located in the third window bay from the left. The entrances consist of a wooden door with cast iron ornamental grille located in a porch, accessible by means of a six-step natural stone staircase. The front facade of dwelling type A is richly decorated with plastered details of wood or stone. Between the piano nobile and first floor is a broad stringcourse which, at the height of the projecting facade sections, is supported by pilasters. Along the roof edge there is a profiled wooden cornice with below it a band of plasterwork with ornamental corbels. Furthermore, there are ashlar bands across the front facade. The windows are originally all wooden sash windows with a T-shaped muntin on the first floor. Above the windows of the piano nobile is a keystone in the form of a male head. On the first floor, the windows are closed at the top by a semicircular spandrel with a mosaic infill of yellow and red brick. In the projecting sections, between the windows on the first floor, boys' heads are placed. At the height of the basement are some wooden windows with ironwork grilles. At the property Wilhelminastraat 45, above the cornice, in the extension of the two window bays wide projecting central section, is a double roof dormer with two wooden double casement windows. The windows are framed by pilasters. The property Wilhelminastraat 59 had as the crowning of the chamfered corner originally a tower-like volume. Now there is a recessed attic window in the roof here. The two window bays wide side facade of the corner property Wilhelminastraat 59 has the same details as the front facade. The windows here, however, are all blind, with the blind windows on the first floor positioned as a sort of loggia set back.
Dwelling type B comprises a total of four dwellings distributed over two blocks. This dwelling type, which is four window bays wide, is built up from a ground floor, first floor and attic storey and is covered per block by a hipped roof clad in grey Dutch tiles and mastic. The front facade is decorated with plastered details of wood or stone, such as a stringcourse and a gutter moulding. The window bays in which the entrances are located are projecting and are closed above the gutter moulding by a roof dormer with a pediment, which is flanked by corner pieces with profiled bands. The entrances, consisting of somewhat recessed wooden panelled doors with two-step stoops, are framed by a pilaster setting with ashlar bands and closed by a pediment with semicircular fronton supported by corner pieces. The windows in the front facade of dwelling type B are originally all wooden sash windows with a T-shaped muntin on the first floor and are framed by white plastered quoins and keystones. The windows on the first floor are closed along the top by a semicircular spandrel filled with a mosaic of yellow and red brick. The window in the roof dormer is a double casement wooden window.
The two dwellings of dwelling type C together form the central section of the residential block. This dwelling type is built up from a ground floor, first floor, second floor and attic storey and is four window bays wide. Together, the two dwellings are under one hipped roof clad in grey Dutch tiles and mastic. The front facades are richly decorated with plastered details of wood or stone, such as stringcourses between the storeys, ashlar courses, a gutter moulding with below it a frieze with triglyphs and metopes and keystones above the windows. At the height of the first floor, between the windows, there is a brick pilaster setting, while at the height of the second floor the windows are separated by plastered pilasters and half-columns. The window bays in which the entrances are located, respectively the third window bay (Wilhelminastraat 51) and second window bay (Wilhelminastraat 53) from the left, are projecting. The entrances consist of wooden doors with cast iron ornamental grilles framed by plastered pilasters and are closed by a pediment. The windows in dwelling type C are on the ground floor double wooden casement windows and on the floors above wooden sash windows, with the windows on the second floor having a T-shaped muntin. The projecting window bays are closed above the gutter moulding by a roof dormer with double wooden frame provided with corner pieces and pediment.
The rear facades of this residential block have the same building height as the front facades. Originally, wooden four-, six- and eight-pane windows are located here. On the ground floor and piano nobile, originally wooden kitchen doors and wooden casement garden doors are located. The rear extension contains an external door and two casement doors in a half-bay window.
Valuation
A largely well-preserved residential block with townhouses from 1884 in a combination of Eclecticism and neo-renaissance style, of general importance because of its architectural historical value and its urban planning and ensemble value as a characteristic component of the 19th-century formal urban expansion around Wilhelminastraat; the building block is a characterizing element in the eastern street facade of Wilhelminastraat, which appears as a unity in terms of architecture. The residential block is also of cultural historical importance as an element in the history of housing for the wealthy and is important within the oeuvre of the architect A. van der Steur jr.
