Inleiding

Description
Introduction
VILLA in eclectic style designed by L.P. Zocher from 1866. The property is prominently situated from an urban planning perspective against a slope of the Bolwerken in the northwestern corner of Kennemerplein, to which it stands at an angle. The surrounding garden with lawn and mature deciduous trees is separated from the street by a hedge following the curved boundary fence. The villa belongs to the building movement that resulted especially between 1864 and 1870 in the realisation of eleven villas on the Bolwerken. The Bolwerken were shortly after 1821 transformed according to a design by J.D. Zocher jr. into an undulating public garden in English landscape style.
The building style of the property is derived from the "Italian villa with tower", a residential house that was frequently built in the first half of the 19th century in Germany and England and which is characterised by an irregular main form around a tower-like volume, gently sloping gabled roofs and neoclassical detailing.
The villa was subsequently enlarged on the northwest side with a single-storey extension. Against the northeastern corner of the tower stands a square chimney not in keeping with the character of the property (falling outside protection). The property is currently in use as an office.
Description
The sub-cellaraged villa stands on an irregular floor plan and consists largely of two storeys under a composite gabled roof with gentle roof slope and zinc covering. In the T-shaped main mass on the southwest are the former living rooms. On the northeast are the former service rooms. Here is also the staircase placed in the tower at the height of three storeys under a gently sloping zinc-covered tent roof. The main mass is extended on the northeast, southeast and southwest sides with rectangular volumes at the height of one storey. Each of these has a balcony with balustrade accessible from the floor level of the main mass. The southeastern extension (front) is uniquely oriel-shaped. The masonry consists of whitewashed brickwork with neoclassical decoration consisting among other things of lisenes, spandrels and crests above the windows in the form of projecting mouldings on consoles. All windows are rectangular, sliding or casement, executed in wood and still partly provided with the original T-panes. Only the attic storey and the third storey of the tower have semicircular windows. Above the porch of the entrance section closed off by balusters from the street side is a canopy covered with wire glass on thin cast-iron pillars. Balusters also form the blind parapet below the window of the directly adjacent room on the street side.
Valuation
The Eclectic villa dating from 1866 is of general importance from a cultural-historical and architectural-historical point of view as a good example of a residential house for the well-to-do from the third quarter of the 19th century, and also because of its ensemble value as part of the 19th-century villa development in relation to the landscape design of the Bolwerken.
