Inleiding
In 1856 door Louis Royer (1793-1868) ontworpen STANDBEELD van Lourens Janszoon Coster, de vermeende uitvinder van de boekdrukkunst in 1423. Het standbeeld, bestaande uit een bronzen beeld op een natuurstenen sokkel, staat aan de oostzijde van de Grote Markt, vlak bij het geboortehuis van Coster aan de Grote Markt 25.
Het bronzen beeld is gegoten door de firma L.J. Enthoven en Co. te Den Haag. De natuurstenen sokkel werd ontworpen door H.T.G. Tetar van Elven uit Amsterdam en werd gehouwen door de Haarlemse steenhouwer L. Sabelis jr. en zijn zoon.
Het beeld van Lourens Janszoon Coster, in de volksmond "Loutje" geheten, is, wegens herinrichting van de Grote Markt, verscheidene malen verplaatst. Oorspronkelijk stond er rondom de sokkel van het beeld een hekje.
Omschrijving
Het standbeeld van Lourens Janszoon Coster bestaat uit een circa drie meter hoge sokkel van Escozijnse steen met daarop het in brons gegoten beeld van Coster dat eveneens circa drie meter meet.
De achtzijdige sokkel, die bestaat uit vier brede en vier smalle zijden, staat op een twee treden hoog stoepje van natuursteen dat eveneens achtzijdig is. De sokkel loopt met een tweetal inspringingen recht naar boven toe en wordt bovenaan afgesloten door een achtzijdige dekplaat waarop het bronzen beeld geplaatst is. De sokkel heeft onder de dekplaat omlopend een horizontale band, die is versierd met bladmotieven. Voorts is de sokkel versierd met gotische drie- en vierpasmotieven.
In de vier brede zijden van de sokkel zijn teksten uitgehouwen. In de oostelijke zijde staat: "LOURENS JANSZOON COSTER, HULDE VAN HET NEDERLANDSCHE VOLK, MDCCCLVI". In de noordelijke zijde staat: "UITVINDER VAN DE BOEKDRUKKUNST MET BEWEEGBARE UIT METAAL GEGOTEN LETTERS". In de westelijke brede zijde van het beeld staat te lezen: "LAVRENTIVS IOANNIS FILIVS COSTERVS, POSVERVENT CIVES NEERLANDICI, MDCCCLVI" en in de zuidelijke brede zijde staat: "TYPOGRAPHIÆ LITTERIS MOBILIBVS E METALLO FVSIS INVENTOR".
Het bronzen beeld, dat is geplaatst op een achtzijdige bronzen plint, geeft Coster staande weer, waarbij het linkerbeen als standbeen dient en het rechterbeen als speelbeen. Coster, die gekleed is in een lang geplooid gewaad en een hoofddeksel op heeft, is met zijn gezicht naar het westen gericht. In zijn linkerhand houdt hij een boek tegen zijn borst geklemd en in zijn rechter vooruit gestoken hand toont hij een gevleugelde letter "A". Achter Coster staat een boomstronk.

In 1856 designed by Louis Royer (1793-1868) STATUE of Lourens Janszoon Coster, the alleged inventor of the art of printing in 1423. The statue, consisting of a bronze figure on a natural stone base, stands on the east side of the Grote Markt, close to Coster's birthplace at Grote Markt 25.
The bronze figure was cast by the firm L.J. Enthoven and Co. at Den Haag. The natural stone base was designed by H.T.G. Tetar van Elven from Amsterdam and was carved by the Haarlem stonemason L. Sabelis jr. and his son.
The figure of Lourens Janszoon Coster, popularly called "Loutje", has been moved several times due to the reorganisation of the Grote Markt. Originally there was a small fence around the base of the statue.
Description
The statue of Lourens Janszoon Coster consists of a base approximately three metres high of Escozijnse stone with the bronze-cast figure of Coster placed upon it, which likewise measures approximately three metres.
The octagonal base, consisting of four broad and four narrow sides, stands on a two-step high natural stone plinth that is likewise octagonal. The base rises straight upward with two indentations and is crowned at the top by an octagonal coping plate upon which the bronze figure is placed. The base has beneath the coping plate an encircling horizontal band, which is decorated with leaf motifs. Furthermore the base is decorated with Gothic trefoil and quatrefoil motifs.
Texts are carved into the four broad sides of the base. On the eastern side it reads: "LOURENS JANSZOON COSTER, TRIBUTE OF THE DUTCH PEOPLE, MDCCCLVI". On the northern side it reads: "INVENTOR OF THE ART OF PRINTING WITH MOVEABLE LETTERS CAST FROM METAL". On the western broad side of the statue the inscription reads: "LAVRENTIVS IOANNIS FILIVS COSTERVS, POSVERVENT CIVES NEERLANDICI, MDCCCLVI" and on the southern broad side it reads: "TYPOGRAPHIÆ LITTERIS MOBILIBVS E METALLO FVSIS INVENTOR".
The bronze figure, which is placed on an octagonal bronze plinth, depicts Coster standing, with his left leg as the supporting leg and his right leg as the free leg. Coster, who is dressed in a long pleated garment and wears a head-covering, has his face turned toward the west. In his left hand he holds a book clasped to his chest and in his right hand extended forward he displays a winged letter "A". Behind Coster stands a tree stump.
Valuation
The statue dating from 1856 in partly neogothic partly Naturalistic style is of general importance because of its art and cultural-historical value and as a tribute to Lourens Janszoon Coster, the alleged inventor of the art of printing. Furthermore the statue is of importance because of the image-supporting value which it possesses through its siting on the Grote Markt.
