Inleiding
De WATERTOREN van Ootmarsum is in 1934 gebouwd in opdracht van de Waterleiding Maatschappij Overijssel. Het bouwwerk meet slechts 9.05 meter in hoogte. Door de ligging op de Kuipersberg was het niet nodig de toren hoger te bouwen om voldoende druk op het leidingnet te krijgen. Hierdoor is dit de laagste watertoren van Nederland. De watertoren met betonnen vlakbodemreservoir bevindt zich aan de zuidzijde van de Almelosestraat buiten de bebouwde kern van Ootmarsum. Doordat de toren uit geometrische vormen bestaat en door materiaalgebruik en detaillering herinnert de architectuur van de toren aan de latere, meer zakelijke variant van de Amsterdamse School uit de jaren dertig van de twintigste eeuw.
Omschrijving
De watertoren heeft twee geometrische hoofdvormen. Het betonnen vlakbodemreservoir is ondergebracht in een verticaal geplaatste cilinder. Deels in de cilinder geschoven staat hier een vierkante traptoren tegenaan. De watertoren is geheel bekleed met rode machinale baksteen in staand verband. De platte daken zijn voorzien van een betonnen dakrand. De cilinder is op één meter onder de dakrand voorzien van betonnen waterspuwers en staat op een uitgemetseld basement. De trappartij wordt verlicht door drie in verhouding zeer hoge sleuven met betonnen raamdorpelsteen in de westgevel. Rechtsboven de entreegevel (N) bevindt zich een vlaggemast.
De toegang tot de traptoren wordt gevormd door een opgeklampte deur met smeedijzeren sierbeslag onder een rondboog. Rechtsboven de deur is een naamplaat aangebracht met daarop: 'Watertoren Ootmarsum ... Waterbedrijf Overijssel'. De watertoren staat op een talud dat is te beklimmen via een bakstenen trapje van vijf treden dat naar de deur leidt.
Waardering
WATERTOREN met betonnen vlakbodemreservoir van architectuurhistorisch en stedenbouwkundig belang vanwege:
- de vormgeving in een zakelijke variant van de Amsterdamse School stijl

Introduction
The WATER TOWER of Ootmarsum was built in 1934 on commission of the Waterworks Company Overijssel. The structure measures only 9.05 metres in height. Due to its location on the Kuipersberg it was not necessary to build the tower higher to obtain sufficient pressure on the pipe network. This makes it the lowest water tower in the Netherlands. The water tower with concrete flat-bottomed reservoir is situated on the south side of the Almelosestraat outside the built-up area of Ootmarsum. Because the tower consists of geometric forms and through material use and detailing the architecture of the tower recalls the later, more business-like variant of the Amsterdam School from the nineteen thirties.
Description
The water tower has two geometric main forms. The concrete flat-bottomed reservoir is housed in a vertically placed cylinder. Partly slipped into the cylinder is a square staircase tower. The water tower is entirely clad with red machine brick in stretcher bond. The flat roofs are provided with a concrete roof edge. The cylinder is provided with concrete water spouts at one metre below the roof edge and stands on a detailed basement. The stairway is lit by three comparatively very tall slots with concrete window sill-stone in the west gable. To the right above the entrance gable (N) is a flagpole.
Access to the staircase tower is formed by a clamped door with wrought iron decorative hardware under a round arch. To the right above the door is a nameplate with: 'Water Tower Ootmarsum ... Water Company Overijssel'. The water tower stands on a talus which can be climbed via a brick staircase of five steps leading to the door.
