Inleiding
De WEGWIJZER staat in de berm van de weg die langs de Kollumer Trekvaart voert, zeer waarschijnlijk op zijn originele plaats. De noord-zuid lopende Kollumer Trekvaart is een zijtak van de Stroobosser Trekvaart (1651-1655) die van Stroobos naar Dokkum voert. Deze vaart en haar bruggen waren en zijn nog steeds in beheer bij het Rijk. De wegwijzer verwijst met een pijl in zuidelijke richting naar het "Rijkskanaal" en de "Rijksweg". Met deze laatste verwijzing wordt de oude weg van Groningen naar Leeuwarden bedoeld, waarvan het tracé deels langs de Stroobosser trekvaart, juist onderlangs Augsbuurt en Kollum, naar Buitenpost liep. In het kader van de opbouw van een nationaal wegennetwerk onder rijkstoezicht (onder Willem I en kort daarna) is deze verbinding in de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw gecompleteerd, als Rijksweg bestempeld en rond 1840 bestraat. De wegwijzer zal dan ook dateren uit deze periode, rond 1850. Onduidelijk is door welke overheid de wegwijzer is geplaatst.
Omschrijving
De wegwijzer is van witgeschilderd natuursteen. De vorm is een voorloper van de 'paddestoel'; een zich iets verjongende lage pijler met daarop een kubus die aan de bovenkant met een bijna platte diamantkop is afgetopt. Het vlak van de kubus aan de straatzijde bevat de ingebeitelde tekst "RIJKSKANAAL", daaronder een pijl die in zuidelijke richting wijst en daaronder "RIJKSWEG".
Waardering
De wegwijzer te Kollum uit ongeveer 1850, is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch belang:
- vanwege de historische functie, die verwijst naar de opbouw van de Nederlandse infrastructuur in de negentiende eeuw;
- vanwege de hoge mate van zeldzaamheid van dergelijke wegwijzers.

Introduction
The WAYFINDER stands in the verge of the road that runs along the Kollumer Trekvaart, very probably on its original site. The north-south running Kollumer Trekvaart is a branch of the Stroobosser Trekvaart (1651-1655) that runs from Stroobos to Dokkum. This waterway and its bridges were and still are managed by the State. The wayfinder points with an arrow in a southerly direction to the "Rijkskanaal" and the "Rijksweg". With this latter reference is meant the old road from Groningen to Leeuwarden, of which the route partly ran along the Stroobosser trekvaart, just below Augsbuurt and Kollum, to Buitenpost. In the context of the construction of a national road network under state supervision (under Willem I and shortly afterwards) this connection was completed in the first half of the nineteenth century, designated as Rijksweg and surfaced around 1840. The wayfinder will therefore date from this period, around 1850. It is unclear by which authority the wayfinder was placed.
Description
The wayfinder is made of whitewashed natural stone. The form is a precursor of the 'mushroom' type; a slightly tapering low pillar with on top of it a cube that is topped at the top with an almost flat diamond-shaped head. The plane of the cube facing the street contains the chiselled text "RIJKSKANAAL", below it an arrow pointing in a southerly direction and below that "RIJKSWEG".
Valuation
The wayfinder in Kollum from approximately 1850, is of general cultural-historical importance:
- because of its historical function, which refers to the construction of Dutch infrastructure in the nineteenth century;
- because of the high degree of rarity of such wayfinders.
