Inleiding
Het voormalig POSTKANTOOR met directeurswoning dateert van 1888. De gemeente Kollumerland besloot indertijd, na rijkstoestemming te hebben gekregen voor de vestiging van een postkantoor, de bouw daarvan zelf ter hand te nemen en het pand vervolgens te verhuren aan het Rijk. Vandaar dat in Kollum een van de weinige postkantoren van na 1883 staat dat niet door de rijksbouwmeester van Noord-Nederland, C.H. Peters, is ontworpen. Waarschijnlijk is het ontwerp, dat eenvoudige elementen in neorenaissancetrant bevat, van de hand van H.A. Zondag, destijds de gemeentearchitect; aannemer was I.R. Dijkstra. Het pand is georiënteerd op het zuiden en staat op de hoek met het Rechthuisplein dichtbij de Trekvaart. In 1908 is het pand verbouwd onder leiding van C.H. Peters, waarbij de indeling van de westgevel is gewijzigd. Waarschijnlijk is toen een aanbouw toegevoegd. Het exterieur is vrij gaaf; de raamblinden zijn verwijderd, evenals het gietijzeren hek langs het voorerf. Ook is op de dakkapel aan de voorzijde een gebroken fronton met piron verwijderd. Inwendig is het pand tot in de jaren zestig van de twintigste eeuw gewijzigd, waarbij wel de originele loketten werden gehandhaafd. Een garage van latere datum heeft geen functionele relatie met het postkantoor en valt buiten de bescherming van rijkswege evenals een trafohuisje van het PEB.
Omschrijving
Het voormalige postkantoor is in twee bouwlagen op een vrijwel vierkante plattegrond opgetrokken in bruine baksteen op een smalle gepleisterde plint. Het staat onder een afgeknot schilddak, gedekt met zwart geglazuurde daktegels. In het linker, iets uitspringende deel van het zuidelijke dakschild, staat een houten dakkapel met geprofileerde gootlijst onder plat dak. Aan weerszijden van het vierruitsvenster zitten klauwstukken met voluten. Onder de geprofileerde daklijst van het schilddak een iets geprofileerde fries. De negenruitsschuifvensters in voor-, achter- en rechterzijgevel en de deuren staan onder segmentboogvormige strekken met een natuurstenen sluitsteen; in de boogtrommels metselwerk in keperverband, met bruine en gele baksteen. Een geprofileerde cordonlijst scheidt de twee bouwlagen. In de voorgevel bevindt zich in het linker uitspringende deel de dubbele houten paneelvoordeur en tussen het tweede en derde venster de originele gietijzeren brievenbus. In de rechterzijgevel is uiterst rechts een eenvoudige houten deur met bovenlicht. In de achtergevel zijn twee vernieuwde deuren. De linker zijgevel bevat twee negenruitsvensters, een vierruitsdeur en enkele halfronde vensters. Aan het achterste deel van deze gevel is een aanbouw onder plat dak: vensters en aanbouw zijn waarschijnlijk in 1908 aangebracht. Het INTERIEUR: inwendig zijn alleen de originele houten loketten met geprofileerde lijsten en een decoratieve bovenrand van monumentale waarde. Ook zijn nog enkele paneeldeuren aanwezig. De indeling van de verdieping is origineel, die van de begane grond gewijzigd.
Waardering
Het voormalig postkantoor te Kollum uit 1888 is van algemeen cultuurhistorisch en architectuurhistorisch belang:
- als een van de zeldzame voorbeelden van een postkantoor van na 1883 dat niet in de stijl van de zogenaamde postkantorengotiek van C.H. Peters is gebouwd;

Introduction
The former POST OFFICE with director's residence dates from 1888. At the time, the municipality of Kollumerland decided, after receiving state permission to establish a post office, to undertake the construction itself and subsequently to lease the building to the State. Hence in Kollum stands one of the few post offices built after 1883 that was not designed by the national architect for North Netherlands, C.H. Peters. The design, which contains simple elements in neo-Renaissance style, was probably drawn up by H.A. Zondag, then the municipal architect; the contractor was I.R. Dijkstra. The building is oriented to the south and stands on the corner with the Rechthuisplein near the Trekvaart. In 1908 the building was remodelled under the direction of C.H. Peters, whereby the layout of the west facade was altered. At that time a wing was probably added. The exterior is fairly well preserved; the window shutters have been removed, as has the cast-iron fence along the front courtyard. Also, a broken pediment with pinnacle has been removed from the roof dormer on the front. Internally the building has been altered until the 1960s, although the original counters were retained. A garage of later date has no functional relationship with the post office and falls outside state protection, as does a transformer house belonging to the PEB.
Description
The former post office is built in two storeys on an almost square ground plan in brown brick on a narrow rendered plinth. It stands under a truncated hipped roof covered with black glazed roof tiles. In the left, slightly projecting part of the southern roof slope, there stands a wooden roof dormer with moulded gutter line under a flat roof. On either side of the four-pane window are claw pieces with scrolls. Below the moulded roof line of the hipped roof is a slightly moulded frieze. The nine-pane sash windows in the front, rear and right side facades and the doors stand under segmental arch lintels with a natural stone keystone; in the arch drums masonry in herringbone bond, with brown and yellow brick. A moulded cordon line separates the two storeys. In the front facade, in the left projecting part is the double wooden panelled front door and between the second and third window the original cast-iron letterbox. In the right side facade is at the far right a simple wooden door with fanlight. In the rear facade are two renewed doors. The left side facade contains two nine-pane windows, a four-pane door and several semi-circular windows. Attached to the rear part of this facade is a wing under a flat roof: windows and wing were probably added in 1908. The INTERIOR: internally only the original wooden counters with moulded lines and a decorative top edge are of monumental value. Several panelled doors are also still present. The layout of the first floor is original, that of the ground floor has been altered.
Valuation
The former post office in Kollum from 1888 is of general cultural-historical and architectural-historical importance:
- as one of the rare examples of a post office built after 1883 that was not constructed in the style of the so-called post office gothic of C.H. Peters;
- owing to the reasonably high degree of integrity of the exterior;
- owing to the presence of the original counters in the interior;
- owing to the simple, but consistent ornamental elements related to the neo-Renaissance.
