Inleiding

Introduction

The LIFEBOAT STATION at Vlieland stands just in front of the last dune row on the east side of the Badweg which runs in a northerly direction from the village of Oost-Vlieland. The lifeboat station stands somewhat obliquely oriented to the Badweg. The building stands on a corner plot of the Badweg with a private west-east running road. It dates -as evidenced by a facade stone- from 1894 and was designed in Artisanal-traditional style by A. Kooreman; the builder was M. Daalder. It is the only known intact stone lifeboat station along the Frisian coast. A board or painting with the name of the house or of the KNZRM has disappeared, as have the wooden gutter clamps and a flagstaff. It is not probable that the toothed form of the (renewed/restored) wind vanes and gutter line is original. Internally no original components such as slides etc. are any longer present. An electricity hut and an electricity box, which stand on either side of the lifeboat station, have no relation to it and fall outside the protection of the state.

Description

The lifeboat station is constructed of brown brick on a rectangular floor plan, under a gabled roof covered with gauged corrugated Frisian tiles, (renewed) toothed wind vanes and likewise gutter line. In the facades are several blind recesses, with at the top stepped rounded corners and with a chamfered lower edge: in the gable ends on each side of the entrance a narrow blind recess, like a blind niche; in each side facade two blind recesses, which are so wide that pilasters are formed between them. The stretches above the two-light windows and the relieving arches above the tall double doors in the gable ends are enlivened with yellow bricks. In both gable ends is in the top a wooden octagonal vent window, with also here yellow bricks in the surround. The gable end at the Badweg contains above the entrance a recess in which a artificial stone strip, previously covered with a nameplate or painted sign.

In this facade in the right blind recess a natural stone plaquette commemorating the laying of the first stone in 1894 by the chairman of the local Rescue Commission, K. Reedeker, also mayor of Vlieland. In the right side facade is a third, single door with two-light fanlight. The INTERIOR is an open space, with partly an open loft. Here no valuable components are present.

Valuation

The lifeboat station from 1894 at Vlieland is of general cultural-historical and typological importance:

- as a particular expression of the history of the KNRM,

- as a typological example of lifeboat stations around the turn of the century,

- because of the high degree of integrity of the exterior,

- because of the high degree of rarity of such stone lifeboat stations in Friesland and at national level.
