Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Brick chapel built in 1934, designed by Jan Stuyt and his son Giacomo.
Description
Chapel with basilica layout and cruciform floor plan and five-sided apse, two sacristies and baptistery - the whole constructed in brick and various types of natural stone. Continuous plinth of Kunrader stone. The central nave has small round-arched windows, the narrow side aisles are executed with round windows. The facades are provided at the corners with rusticated pilasters in Maastricht chalk, also above the windows and around the main entrance with surround and tympanum; the roofs are covered with slate. Simple wooden windows with matching glazing bars. Front facade crowned with lantern in which a bell. Glazed threshold stones. Internally round arches on columns separate the nave from the side aisles; tie rods between the columns, furthermore stained glass windows, small niches for a former cloister, tile flooring, two limestone altars, balustrade for gallery and wooden coffered ceiling.
Valuation
The chapel is of general importance due to its architectural-historical significance as a work by architect Jan Stuyt and his son Giacomo and as a structural and representative building type within the complex of the former midwifery school; moreover the object has been well preserved externally and the interior is in reasonably good condition. It is regarded from an architectural-historical perspective as remarkable when father and son both work as architects and can combine their activities in a single building project with a monumental design such as this chapel. Cultural-historical value lies in the role of the chapel within the medical building complex: apparently in the Interbellum period, alongside healthcare, spiritual care was also considered an indispensable aspect of successful recovery and full human wellbeing.
